history

The ship's designer Thomas McManus drafted the plans for the Adventure and had the ship at the John F. James and Son shipyard in Essex in 1926 with a length of 121.6  ft (37.1  m ), a width of 24.5 ft (7, 5 m), a draft of 14 ft (4.3 m) and a tonnage of 130 RT gross and 62 RT net. The ship was used between Nantucket and Newfoundland to fish for cod , haddock and halibut . With her sails, an additional diesel engine and 14 dories , she was one of the fastest schooners in the US fishing fleet. During their active time she brought fish worth about 4 million US dollars on land and drove the biggest gain of an individual vessel's fishing history one.

In 1953 it was the last of its type to be decommissioned and in 1954 it was converted into a tall ship for cruises. In the course of this, the motor, the shaft and the propeller were removed. The Adventure was used as a cruise ship along the coast of Maine until 1987 , which earned her the nickname "Queen of the Windjammers" ( German  Queen of the Windjammers ).

Jim Sharp, who has owned the ship since 1965, donated it to The Gloucester Adventure Inc., a non-profit organization founded for this purpose , whose tasks include maintenance and restoration, use and marketing as a museum ship, as well as trips on special occasions. The Adventure is an important symbol of the city's role shows Gloucester in the development of the US fishing industry and how a particular type of ship could influence the economy of an entire region.

In the course of the restoration work, the ship was made seaworthy again and was approved for the reception of passengers in 2015.
