The qualification for the African Nations Cup 2014 took place between November 2012 and August 2013. For this purpose, the African national soccer teams were divided into 6 zones. The zones “North” and “West A” each received two starting places at the African Nations Cup 2014 , the other four zones each got three starting places, as 16 teams take part in this competition. As the team of the host country, the South African national soccer team automatically qualified for the finals. FIFA classifies the games as "friendly games", which has an impact on the calculation of the FIFA world rankings , but still counts these games as A international matches, even though only players from the domestic leagues were eligible to play.
