Agave applanata is a species ofthe agave genus ( agave ). An English common name is "Gray Agave".

description

Agave applanata grows individually. The rosettes reach heights of 50 to 100 cm and a diameter of 100 to 200 cm. The variable, linear to lanceolate, strong, bluish to gray leaves are 40 to 60 cm long and 7 to 10 cm wide. The horny leaf margins are serrated. The flexibly arranged, dark brown to reddish end thorn is 3 to 7 cm long.

The paniculate, narrow, straight inflorescence is 4 to 8 m high. The yellow flowers are 55 to 80 mm long and appear in the lower area of ​​the inflorescence and reach to the tip, on loose, short, irregularly arranged branches. The flower tube is 15 to 22 mm long.

Systematics and distribution

Agave applanata grows in Mexico in the states of Durango , Zacatecas , Chihuahua , Hidalgo , México , Puebla , Veracruz , Querétaro and Oaxaca , on stony slopes, in various soil formations, in grasslands and open woodlands up to 2400 m altitude. It is associated with cacti and succulent species.

The first description by Georg Albano von Jacobi was published in 1864. A synonym is Agave schnittspahnii Jacobi .

Agave applanata is a representative of the Ditepalae section . Due to the large distribution area, the variability within the populations is correspondingly high. Agave applanata is grown at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum in Superior, Arizona. Cultivated specimens can be found in Europe in the collection of Jos van Roosbroeck in Belgium and Lake Constance succulents in Germany.
