Agave planifolia is a species of the agave genus( Agave ) in the subfamily of the agave family (Agavoideae). The specific epithet planifolia is derived from the Latin words planus for 'even' and -folius for '-blättrig'.

description

Agave planifolia forms spherical rhizomes . The four to five extended, overhanging, elongated to elliptical leaves are narrowed to the basal, stem-embracing false petiole . Its tip is pointed and has a short tip. The leaves are runny in the area of their stem and at the tip. In the middle they are almost flat. The smooth and dry leathery leaves are semi-succulent. Your unspotted leaf blade is 21 to 30.5 inches long and 3.1 to 6.1 (rarely from 2.5) inches wide. The leaf margins show a narrow hyaline band and are tiny regularly serrated. The remains of the leaf bases surround the rhizome, are coarsely fibrous and 3.8 to 5 centimeters long.

The "eared" inflorescence reaches a height of 120 to 150 centimeters. The short flower-bearing part is 11 centimeters long in culture and bears six to 14 sessile flowers that are spread out when fully grown. The ovary is 15 millimeters long. The cylindrical perigone tube is slightly angled towards the ovary. It has a length of 5 to 7 millimeters. Their elongated, turned back tips are 12 to 19 millimeters long. The stylus protrudes over the flower tube by about millimeters. The club-shaped scars are triangular. The flowering time is autumn.

The egg-shaped fruits are 1.8 inches long. They contain seeds 5 millimeters long.

Systematics and distribution

Agave planifolia is common in the Mexican states of Sonora and Chihuahua in sandy spots near rivers and in oak forest areas.

The first description by Sereno Watson was published in 1887.

Nomenclatory synonyms are Manfreda planifolia (S.Watson) Rose (1903) and Polianthes planifolia (S.Watson) Shinners (1966).

The species belongs to the subgenus Manfreda and is assigned to the Manfreda group there.
