Aglepriston (trade name Alizin ® ad us. Vet. ) Is a synthetic antihormone used in veterinary medicine . It is a derivative of the mifepristone used in human medicine .

Mode of action

The preparation is approved for dogs and cats .

Aglepristone is a so-called antiprogestin , a hormone-like steroid , which has a high binding ability ( affinity ) of progesterone - receptors , but no effect has progesterone. Because it blocks the receptors for this hormone in the womb ( uterus ), it cannot achieve its pregnancy- sustaining effects. The blood level of progesterone is not affected.

use

dog

The drug is used in dogs to prevent embryos from being embedded in the uterus ( prevention of nidation) or to terminate unwanted pregnancy (artificial abortion ). The latter is 100% certain up to the 25th day of pregnancy and possible up to the 45th day of pregnancy.

In addition, Aglepriston can be used to induce childbirth from the 48th day of pregnancy.

The drug is also suitable for the conservative treatment of purulent uterine inflammation ( pyometra ). It leads to an opening of the cervix ( cervix uteri ) and due to the increased motility of the uterus, the pus is expelled . After one to three weeks, the uterus is completely emptied. For conservative pyometra treatment, multiple doses and the additional administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics are necessary. In the case of cystic hyperplasia of the endometrium , this can be aggravated by the drug. In addition, Aglepriston only works safely in metestrus (progesterone value> 1.5 ng / ml, no superficial cells and clods in vaginal cytology ), but not in the presence of follicular cysts and in anoestrus.

cat

In cats, Aglepriston can also be used for conservative pyometry treatment. It can also be used to treat feline fibroadenomatosis ( hyperplasia of the breasts ).
