Map of the Ailuk Atoll |
Ailuk (German outdated: Krusenstern Islands ) is an atoll of the Ratak chain of the Marshall Islands . The atoll has a land area of 5.36 km² with a lagoon area of 177 km². At the 1999 census, the population was 513.
55 of the 57 atoll islands are lined up on the eastern edge of the atoll like on a string of pearls. The two other islands are comparatively isolated on the south side of the atoll (Enije) and on the western corner (Alkilwe or Aglue).
The most important islands of the atoll were all inhabited in 1988 (10), each with a village. In 1999 only seven islands were still inhabited (clockwise, starting in the north):
island | Population 1988 |
Population 1999 |
---|---|---|
Capes | 14th | 7th |
Enejabrok (Enijabro) | 43 | 22nd |
Enejelar | 55 | 5 |
Biking (Bigen) | 8th | 13 |
Ajelep (Ageleb) | 4th | 4th |
Aliej (Aliet) | 14th | 11 |
Barorkan (Bererjan) | 3 | - |
Marib (Maribw) | 8th | - |
Ailuk | 333 | 451 |
Alkilwe (Aglue) | 6th | - |
Ailuk atoll | 488 | 513 |
The population is increasingly concentrated on the main island of Ailuk in the southeast. In 1988 68 percent of the atoll population lived there, and in 1999 almost 88 percent.
There are a total of three navigable passages into the lagoon . These lie in the northwest between Alkilwe and Kapen, from north to south: Eneneman , Moroccan and Erappu . The latter is the best passage. A smaller passage called Enije Channel lies between the islands of Enije and Alkilwe in the southwest.
