Map of Mejit Island |
Mejit (German outdated: New Year's Island ) is an upscale atoll of the Ratak chain of the Marshall Islands . The former atoll has a land area of 1.86 km², the lagoon has dried up. The nearest (real) atoll, Ailuk , is 85 km to the west.
The entire population lives in the main town of the same name and the only town of Mejit on the southwest side. The inhabitants of the island build breadfruit and taro on. Furthermore, they weave well-known mats from the reed-like leaves of the screw tree . Special features of the island are a freshwater lake, unique for the region, with ducks in the northern part of the island and the power supply for the residents through a solar system .
The island has a 900 meter long runway for small aircraft ( IATA code: MJB ), which is almost exclusively served by Air Marshall Islands .
