The Verein Aktion Transsexualität und Menschenrecht eV ( ATME ) is a non-profit interest organization which, according to its own description, advocates the protection and human rights of transsexual people in Germany . ATME also fights for an end to discrimination based on gender identity and is financed from membership fees and donations.

History and description

In 2007 the Transsexuality and Human Rights initiative was founded by transsexual activists. On April 1st, 2008, the association Aktion Transsexualität und Menschenrecht eV emerged, founded by Christina "Tina" Schieferdecker and Kim Schicklang . The ATME was created after the German Institute for Human Rights called on the trans groups to “write a report on the situation of transsexual people in Germany” and was “the only organization” that participated in both 2007 and 2009 and “all of us well-known organizations several times ", whereby" nobody [...] was interested in expressing themselves openly about the situation of transsexual people in Germany. "

The guiding principle is that transsexuality is a physical-biological predisposition, independent of the gender identity disorder . As a result of this inverse approach, ATME is a prominent example of the transsexual movement.

In addition to political campaigns and initiatives, the association publishes the Alternative Human Rights Report on the situation of transsexual people in Germany.

According to a description by the Eberhard Schultz Foundation for Social Human Rights and Participation from 2015, ATME is an organization that “advocates the rights of transgender people and, among other things, the UN Sessions on Equality for Women (CEDAW), the UN social pact and accompanied UPR with human rights reports and oral statements. "

criticism

The association "is based on assumptions of the neurobiological gender discourse according to Horst-Jörg Haupt and differs fundamentally in terms of its terminology and concept from those of the (trans * - ie queer movement) but also from those of the sexology."

Campaigns and Initiatives

BREATH against "The Orsons"

In September 2012, ATME and the transsexual woman Monika Strub took legal action against the hip-hop band Die Orsons . According to ATME's opinion at the time, the song Horst and Monika, with which the Orsons and the rapper Cro entered the 2012 Bundesvision Song Contest as a contribution to the Saarland , would contain transphobic passages and would thus demean transsexuals. After a personal discussion between the participants, the group published an entry on their Facebook profile in which they "thank you for the great conversation [they] had" and in which they apologize and explain the background of their text:

“... With the song Horst & Monika we never intended to offend or even humiliate anyone. If this should have happened against our express intention, we ask for your forgiveness.

We deliberately chose the stylistic device of a partially simplistic, caricaturing representation of such complex and sensitive topics as transsexuality and sex operations in order to make this inspiring change, which we consider incredibly valuable, accessible to the largest possible audience. We welcome the discussion that can now take place with your support. "

I'm not sick…

With the wake-up call: “Transsexuality is not a mental illness! I'm not sick, I'm great ”, ATME and the Spanish LGBT organization FELGTB initiated a campaign against discrimination against transgender people by the World Health Organization . The aim is to get transsexuality off the list of mental illnesses.

Stuttgart Declaration

The Stuttgart Declaration of 2015 is an ATME initiative, funded and supported by the Eberhard Schultz Foundation for Social Human Rights and Participation , among others, and provides alternative treatment recommendations for the health system's handling of transsexual and intersex people. Prominent supporters included Heiner Bielefeldt , Karl-Heinz Brunner , Andrej Hunko , Ulla Jelpke , Stefan Kaufmann , Renate Kirchhoff , Brigitte Lösch , Harald Petzold , Susann Rüthrich and Ute Vogt .
