Albert Andrew Howard

Albert Andrew Howard (born October 6, 1858 in Palmer , Massachusetts , † July 31, 1925 in Cambridge , Massachusetts) was an American classical philologist .

Life

Albert Andrew Howard studied Classical Philology at Harvard University , where he was influenced by William Watson Goodwin and George Martin Lane . Howard turned to Latin grammar early on. After completing his bachelor's degree (1882), he deepened his studies for a year at the University of Leipzig with Georg Curtius , Ludwig Lange and Otto Ribbeck . In 1885 he received his doctorate from Harvard University . After another year in Leipzig (1885-86) Howard went in 1888 as Professor of Latin at the University of California, Berkeley . In 1890 he returned to Harvard University, where he stayed until the end of his life. He was initially a tutor and from 1893 Assistant Professor of Latin. In 1906 Howard was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1908 he was appointed Pope Professor of Latin.

Howard studied Latin grammar and style. His main research interests were the Roman historians Livy and Suetonius . In decades of work, he created an index verborum on Sueton's writings, which carefully documented the style and language use. He wrote further studies on Suetons tradition and on ancient musical instruments. The Latin school grammar, which he edited with James B. Greenough (1903) , was widespread .
