Albert Keller SJ (born April 30, 1932 in Nieder-Roden ; † July 5, 2010 in Munich ) was a German theologian and philosopher .

Life

After graduating from high school in Offenbach am Main , Albert Keller joined the Jesuit order in 1952 and initially studied philosophy at the Philosophical University Berchmanskolleg in Pullach from 1955 to 1958 , then from 1958 to 1962 philosophy , psychology and fundamental theology at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich . In 1963 he was with Helmut Kuhn with the work Being or Existence? Being with Thomas Aquinas in the interpretation of today's scholasticism received his doctorate from the philosophical faculty of the LMU . He then studied Catholic theology from 1962 to 1966 at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome . In 1965 he was ordained a priest .

From 1967, Keller worked as a lecturer at the University of Philosophy of the Jesuits in Munich , and since 1969 as professor for epistemology and philosophy of language . From 1970 to 1976 he was rector of this university, and from 1976 to 1980 he was also head of the Institute for Communication Research and Media Relations. In 1984/1985 he was visiting professor at Georgetown University in Washington, DC , USA. In addition to his work in various committees, he has been a member of the University Council of Landshut University since 1997 . In 2000 he was retired .

From 1971 to 2008, Keller was a member of the Scientific Council of the Catholic Academy in Bavaria . He was a member of the board of the Society of Catholic Publicists in Germany and an honorary member of the Catholic student association KDStV Vandalia Prague to Munich in the CV . He was also a member of the Tegernsee Company of the Association of Bavarian Mountain Rifles . Since 1977 he has been involved in the Rotary Club Munich-Nymphenburg.

In 2003, Keller was awarded the Franz-von-Sales-Tafel from the Society of Catholic Publicists in Germany . According to the laudatory speech at the award ceremony, he was considered to be a particularly “rebellious” and “modern” theologian who loved freedom of spirit, word and language and who also made use of modern media for this purpose. He was also known for his often very provocative sermons in St. Michael in Munich and his appearances on the TV program BR-alpha .

He died in the St. Johannes von Gott palliative ward at the Barmherzigen Brüder hospital in Munich-Nymphenburg.

The School of Philosophy has been holding the Albert Keller Lecture every year on Keller's memory since 2011 . The first speaker in 2011 was the social ethicist Clemens Sedmak . In 2015, the Albert Keller Endowed Chair for Ethics and Value Orientation was established at the University of Philosophy. Its owner is Andreas Trampota SJ .
