Albert Riegel (born March 3, 1802 in Aschaffenburg , † February 13, 1858 there ) was a German painter who primarily created portraits .

Life

Albert Riegel was the son of the servant Johann Riegel and his wife Margarethe nee Krost. His artistic talent was discovered early and promoted in his hometown. As early as 1822, Riegel was working for Duke Wilhelm I of Nassau and his wife, Duchess Luise von Sachsen-Hildburghausen (1794–1825). Then in the same year he began studying history painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, which he completed in 1826.

In 1825 and in the following years, Riegel received portraits from King Ludwig I (Bavaria) and his wife Queen Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen . The portrait of Dimitrios Botsaris, the son of the Greek freedom fighter Markos Botsaris , made in 1829 , made Riegel famous beyond Munich.

Following his orders, the artist worked in the Mainz , Wiesbaden and Frankfurt am Main area from 1829 . In 1830 he stayed in Rüdesheim . In 1841 Riegel settled permanently in Aschaffenburg and worked as a drawing teacher at the royal agricultural and trade school there. He took up this position as the successor to Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck . Together with Martin Balduin Kittel , the rector of the trade school, Riegel published individual editions of the school institution's annual program. After the artist died in 1858, Kittel wrote an extensive obituary for his companion.

In 1841 Albert Riegel married Katharina Roth from Aschaffenburg. The two daughters Elisabeth and Anna Riegel emerged from the marriage. Elisabeth Riegel later married the economist Karl Streit .

Riegel mainly worked in pastel. However, isolated oil paintings by his hand are also known. His artistic role model was Joseph Karl Stieler , whom he probably knew personally from his time in Munich.
