Albert Schindler (born August 19, 1805 in Engelsberg , Austrian Silesia , † May 3, 1861 in Vienna ) was an Austrian painter and graphic artist of the Biedermeier period.

Life

Albrecht Schindler, as his real name was, was born into a poor weaver family in what was then Austrian Silesia . During a trip of the important Austrian painter Peter Fendi, he discovered little Albert's talent for drawing by chance and brought his parents to the point that they gave him their son to Vienna, where Fendi promised to take care of Albert Schindler. Fendi himself was physically disabled from starting a family and lived with his mother and two adopted nieces.

Schindler began studying at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1827 . At the same time, Fendi also gave him private lessons. Schindler was practically accepted into the "family" of Fendis, and lived and worked with Fendi in the small apartment. In addition to Albert Schindler, Fendi had also taken the painters Johann Friedrich Treml and Carl Schindler under his wing in the studio apartment . Despite the great artistic similarities and the intertwined living conditions, Albert Schindler and Carl Schindler were not related to each other.

In 1832 Albert Schindler was able to exhibit his first works in the academy. Fendi trained Schindler as a trainee in the Imperial Coin and Antiquities Cabinet, and when he died in 1842 Schindler succeeded him there as a draftsman and engraver . This activity occupied him a lot, which meant that his painting work was not very large.

Schindler's first marriage was to Antonia Barbara Birnegger, who died in 1849. Schindler married a second time, namely Maria Kappherr, who owned a house in which the couple lived from then on. Schindler also died in the Viennese suburb of Laimgrube No. 102 (today Magdalenenstrasse 58 in Vienna).

power

Albert Schindler actually owes everything to his fatherly friend Peter Fendi. Schindler was also influenced by him artistically, but also by his classmate Carl Schindler, who died very early and was a great talent. Albert Schindler created oil paintings in the style of Viennese Biedermeier painting that depict everyday life at the time, mostly simple scenes in a small format. Similar to Carl Schindler, who became known as the "soldier swindler", he also created moral images from the life of a soldier. As a draftsman and engraver, he made engraving reproductions for several well-known book publications.
