Albrecht VII, Duke of Mecklenburg , called the Beautiful (* July 25, 1486 in Wismar ; † January 7, 1547 in Schwerin ) was the reigning Duke of Mecklenburg in the Mecklenburg-Güstrow region .

Life

Albrecht was the third son of Duke Magnus II of Mecklenburg, ruled after the death of his father († November 20, 1503) with his uncle Balthasar († March 16, 1507) and his brothers Heinrich V and Erich II. († 22 December 1508) jointly. In the division of the state ( Neubrandenburg house contract ) on May 7, 1520 he received the partial duchy of Mecklenburg-Güstrow .

While Heinrich V promoted the Reformation from the beginning , Albrecht opposed it - ultimately in vain.

When Christian II of Denmark was deprived of the throne in 1523 and was captured in 1531 while trying to recapture the country, Albrecht VII appeared as a candidate for the throne, achieved during the feud of the counts (1534-1536), also with the help of the Hanseatic cities Lübeck and Wismar, in the possession of Copenhagen (April 8, 1535), was soon taken over by his opponent Christian III. included on land and sea. On July 29, 1536 he surrendered and renounced his claims.

In 1542/43 he sought in vain with the help of an illustrious party for the Swedish crown by supporting the rebels around Nils Dacke in Småland and in southern Östergötland . His support for the Dacke uprising also failed.

He was buried in the Doberan Minster behind the high altar in the crypt under the octagon.
