Alemitu Bekele (athlete, 1976)

Alemitu Bekele (born August 22, 1976 ) is a Belgian long-distance runner of Ethiopian origin.

In 1997 she won the Tiberias Marathon and came 44th in the marathon of the World Athletics Championships in Athens . At the 1999 World Half Marathon Championships in Palermo, she finished 36th.

In 2000 she applied for asylum in Belgium . In 2001 and 2002 she won the Bruges Marathon and in 2002 the Baden Marathon . In 2003 and 2006 she won the Maas Marathon, and in 2005 she was fifth in the Amsterdam Marathon .

In 2007 she received Belgian citizenship. The following year she became national champion over 10,000 m , in the half marathon and in the marathon. In third place overall in the Eindhoven Marathon , she was also Benelux Marathon Champion.

In 2009 she was fourth in the Zurich Marathon and in 2010 seventh in the Hamburg Marathon .
