The Tiberias Marathon ( Hebrew מרתון טבריה) is a marathon in Tiberias that has been taking place since 1977 around the turn of the year. The organizers are the city of Tiberias and the Israeli Athletics Federation, which hosts its marathon championship as part of the event. A 10 km run will be held as a side competition.

history

The Tiberias Marathon is the first marathon in Israel to be launched as a continuous event. There was also the Tel Aviv marathon from 1981 to 1995 . A repetition of the 42.195 km run took place there in 2009 for the 100th anniversary of the city, which has taken place annually since then. The En Gedi Marathon has been held since 1983 and since 2012 there has been an annual marathon in Jerusalem.

In 2007 the event caused political entanglements when Leonard Mucheru Maina , who was born in Kenya and competed for Bahrain under the name Mushir Salem Jawher , won. It was the first time that an athlete from an Arab country had taken part in the race. After the runner was asked to apologize for this and the Bahraini authorities subsequently made difficulties with issuing a visa, he reversed the change and went back to his home country Kenya. Starting as Leonard Mucheru Maina , he defended his title the following year with a new record.

route

The course is a turning point route on the south bank of the Sea of Galilee , which runs from the center of Tiberia to Kibbutz En Gev and back. Since the route is more than 200 meters below sea level , it is the deepest above-ground marathon in the world.
