Alexander George Gut (born March 15, 1988 in Poughkeepsie , New York ) is an American singer , multi-instrumentalist and producer of his music. He plays the piano , guitar and drums , among other things . He mainly publishes his works on his YouTube channel.

Biography and career

Goot started recording music at the age of 16. Music has always been his lifelong dream and there was never a “plan B” for him.

Goot works on his own songs as well as on cover versions . He gained more attention through the cover versions. His YouTube channel “ gootmusic ” has become the most important platform for him. He has been uploading his newly published works there since 2010. His channel quickly became one of the most followed music channels on YouTube. The proportion of cover versions predominates.

The social web gave him the opportunity; the classic route via the music industry is no longer applicable for him. Today, his channel has over 3.3 million subscribers and over 680 million video views (as of December 2018). If you include his appearances on various social networks such as Facebook , Twitter , MySpace and Instagram , he reaches a fan base of several million people.

Goot is an independent musician and has no record deal. He sings, makes music and produces the songs himself. Goot has set up his own home studio in Poughkeepsie, which can be seen in many music videos. He was able to finance his first studio album "In Your Atmosphere" through a successful crowdfunding campaign on the Kickstarter platform .

After many years of recording his music and videos in his home studio in Poughkeepsie, he moved to Los Angeles in early February 2015, after his European tour in January 2015.

Goot summarizes the cover versions he recorded alone in the album series "Songs I Wish I Wrote" , of which there are now five editions. During his career he has also recorded joint cover versions of songs with numerous other musicians, who are also primarily represented on YouTube, which are published in the album series "Alex Goot & Friends" . Cover versions with the band Against the Current and the artists Chad Sugg, Luke Conard, Kurt Schneider , Sam Tsui and Tyler Ward were created.

In August 2015, Goot released a cover of the song Bohemian Rhapsody on his YouTube channel, the production of which was "a truly incredible and enlightening experience" for him. In his opinion, it represents the most important achievement of his as a music producer, as he “passionately” invested over 350 hours of work in 419 audio tracks (over 300 of them vocals) for his cover. According to his own statement, no existing samples were used, everything was recorded and processed by him. In addition to Goot, many well-known YouTubers sing along on this cover, including Kurt Hugo Schneider, Sam Tsui and Tyler Ward. In addition, an elaborate music video was shot in Goot's studio in Los Angeles, the second half of which was implemented in one-take style. Kurt Hugo Schneider directed this.

On June 19, 2016, Goot and his fiancée Elle Fowler were married at Bacara Resort & Spa in Santa Barbara , California.

His most successful works include cover versions of the songs "Counting Stars" (originally by OneRepublic ), "Good Time" (originally by Owl City ), "Catch My Breath" (originally by Kelly Clarkson ) and "Beauty And A Beat" (originally by Justin Bieber ). These four music videos alone received tens of millions of views on YouTube.

Music genre

In many of his music videos, Goot appears as a one-man band and plays many instruments. In addition to guitar and bass guitar, he also plays piano, accordion, drums, cajón and glockenspiel . He uses the carillon in many works, for example at the beginning of his cover of "It Girl" (originally by Jason Derulo ).

What stands out from his music is that every instrument he uses is clearly audible, creating a natural and spatial sound. His works have a higher musical dynamic than comparable works from mainstream pop. In this way he manages to distance himself from the loudness war that is very pronounced in mainstream pop.

It is often noticeable that Goot adds another instrument in the background in the second or third chorus.
