Alexander Bernstein

Alexander Bernstein, Baron Bernstein of Craigweil (born March 15, 1936 in London , † April 12, 2010 ibid) was a British politician ( Labor ) and managing director of Granada TV plc .

Life

Bernstein, whose great-grandfather as an immigrant from Latvia to the UK came, grew up near Bognor Regis and attended Stowe School in Buckingham in the county of Buckinghamshire . He studied Economics ( Economics ) at St John's College of the University of Cambridge .

After graduating, he began his professional career in 1959 as an assistant manager of a cinema in Brixton, London . In 1961 he went as a trainee at Granada TV in Manchester , a British media company that his uncle Sidney Bernstein was founded and his father Cecil Bernstein. From 1964 to 1979 he was Director ( Director ) at the Granada Group plc operates from 1971 to 1975 he was co-managing ( Joint Managing Director ) of Granada Television Ltd . From 1977 to 1986 he was CEO ( Chairman ) of Granada TV Rental Ltd . From 1979 to 1996 he was Chairman of the Board of Directors of Granada Group plc . In 1996, after 32 years in the company, Bernstein withdrew from the company's management and retired.

Bernstein was promoted to Life Peer on May 15, 2000 as Baron Bernstein of Craigweil, of Craigweil in the County of West Sussex . In connection with his appointment as a Life Peer, it has been speculated that the appointment was made in compensation for his financial support from Prime Minister Tony Blair . Bernstein, in accordance with the family tradition, for many years the Labor Party with donations considered. Bernstein himself rejected this accusation as a "curios concept" .

Bernstein received awards from several universities. In 1981 he received the honorary degree as Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) From the University of Salford in Salford in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester , in 1996 he received an honorary doctorate of law degree as Doctor of Law (LL.D.) from the University of Manchester .

Ptivat was passionate about art and theater . He was an avid collector of contemporary art. His private art collection included works by Roy Lichtenstein , Jasper Johns and Kenneth Noland . He has been Director and co-owner of Waddington Galleries on Cork Street in London since 1966 . He was chairman ( chairman ) of the Royal Exchange Theater in Manchester and the Old Vic Theater . He founded the Quercus Trust , a charity to support young theater professionals, and was also a trustee ( trustee ) of the Theaters Trust .

Bernstein's hobbies were skiing and gardening . Bernstein died of complications from a weak heart .

Bernstein married Vanessa Anne Mills in 1962 and has a son and daughter with her. The couple divorced in 1993. In 1995 he married Angela Mary Serota, ex-wife of Nicholas Serota .
