Alexander Longolius (born December 30, 1935 in Berlin ; † January 31, 2016 ) was a German politician ( SPD ).

Life

Longolius was an exchange student in the USA in 1952/53 as a participant in AFS Intercultural Encounters and graduated from high school in Berlin in 1954. He studied political science, history and English at the German University of Politics and at the Free University of Berlin . From 1958 to 1976 he worked in the school service. From 1967 to 1970 he was in charge of the visitor service at the Bundeshaus Berlin . From 1970 to 1973 he was director of the Volkshochschule Berlin-Schöneberg and then from 1973 to 1988 he was head of the department for political education at the Federal Government's representative in Berlin (department for internal German relations). In 1988 he became the managing director of the "Initiative Berlin - USA eV", a private association he founded to promote German-American relations .

politics

Alexander Longolius joined the SPD in 1963 and was involved in the Charlottenburg district . From 1973 to 1981 he was a member of the Berlin State Board . In the Berlin election in 1975 he was first elected to the Berlin House of Representatives, to which he belonged until 1988. In the 1990 election he returned to the House of Representatives for an electoral term, but left parliament for good in 1995. During his membership in parliament he held various functions. In 1981 he was brief chairman of the SPD parliamentary group and then until 1985 Vice-President of the House of Representatives.

Act

In 1983 Alexander Longolius founded the Partnership of Parliaments (PdP) together with other MPs in San Francisco , which he chaired for ten years. The partnership of parliaments honored him in 2011 with the Carl Schurz badge. He was co-founder and until 2014 chairman of the board of the Checkpoint Charlie Foundation and the Berlin - USA eV initiative with the Brücke der Jugend . He was a long-time member of the European Academy Berlin and a member of the Federal Board of Trustees of the International Federation (IB) .

In 2005 Longolius was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.
