Alexander Lvovich Gerschun ( Russian Александр Львович Гершун ; born October 29, jul. / 10. November  1868 greg. In Sokółka in Grodno , † June 8 jul. / 21st June  1915 greg. In Petrograd ) was a Russian physicist and manager .

Life

Gerschun came from a Jewish family of the educated middle class . He grew up in Vilnius , where his father Lev Jakowlewitsch Gerschun (1836-1897) was chief physician of the City Jewish Hospital (1873-1897). In 1886 Gerschun graduated from the 1st Vilnius grammar school and began studying at the University of St. Petersburg in the physics and mathematics faculty . In the third course he wrote his first scientific work Critical Analysis of an Investigation of the Temperature of the Highest Density of Water and Aqueous Solutions , for which he received a gold medal.

After completing his studies in 1890, Gerschun continued to work at the university and taught at the Gurewitsch Gymnasium (until 1902). 1891-1892 he was the editorial secretary of the oldest Russian technical-scientific journal Die Elektrizität . From 1893 he worked closely with FF Petruschewski , who ran the Brockhaus-Efron encyclopedia. Gerschun wrote a number of articles for this, in particular the article Physics . In 1896, he took part as a physicist- photographer in the Lena expedition of the Russian Astronomical Society to observe solar eclipses .

From 1901 Gerschun headed the chair for general physics at the artillery officer school in Kronstadt . During these years he became thoroughly familiar with the manufacture of optical devices in Russia and other countries, as well as with manufacturing processes for the optical devices of the Russian Navy . From 1906 he advised the optics department of the Obuchow factory in St. Petersburg and then became head of this department in 1909.

In 1908 Gerschun taught at the St. Petersburg Pedagogical Institute for Women .

In 1912 Gerschun became the scientific director of the Russian Society for Optical and Mechanical Manufacturing . which in 1913 tackled the establishment of an optics plant in St. Petersburg and began production in 1914 (since 1969 Leningrad Opto-Mechanical Association (LOMO) ). Gerschun was the first director of this plant.

Gerschun's son was the physicist Andrei Alexandrowitsch Gerschun . Gerschun's brother was the lawyer Boris Lwowitsch Gerschun , who emigrated after the October Revolution .
