Alexander Vyacheslavovich Mikhailin ( Russian Александр Вячеславович Михайлин ; born August 18, 1979 in Moscow ) is a Russian judoka who mostly competed in the heavyweight division or in the open class.

Athletic career

The years up to 2005

Michailin was Russian junior light heavyweight champion in 1996, and in 1996 he finished second at the European Junior Championships. In 1997 he won the Russian Junior Championships and the European Junior Heavyweight Championships. In 1998 he won the military world championships in both the light heavyweight division and in the open class. In the same year he was also junior world champion. In January 1999, Mikhailin won his first World Cup in Moscow. At the European Championships in 1999 he won the bronze medal in the light heavyweight division after losing to Ariel Zeevi from Israel. At the 1999 World Championships in Birmingham, he lost only to the South Korean Jang Sung-ho and received the bronze medal, also in the light heavyweight division. With the Russian team, Michailin was European champion in 1999. At the Russian Championships in 1999, he won his first title in the open class, having previously finished second in the heavyweight division. In 2000 he won the heavyweight and open class titles at both the Russian U23 championships and the Russian championships. At the Olympic Games 2000 Russia was represented in the top weight class by Tamerlan Tmenow .

In 2001 Michailin won the open class title at the European Championships by beating the Dutchman Dennis van der Geest in the final . At the 2001 World Championships in Munich, he won two gold medals. In the heavyweight final he defeated the Turkish Selim Tataroğlu , in the open class he won the final against the Israeli Ariel Zeevi. He lost the final of the 2001 Summer Universiade to van der Geest. Two months after the Universiade, Mikhailin became military world champion. At the European Championships in 2002 he received the silver medal after losing the final to van der Geest. He successfully defended his military world title in 2002.

In the final of the open class at the European Championships in 2003 , Michailin met Dennis van der Geest again and this time Michailin won. In 2004 Tmenow competed again at the Olympic Games, and in 2004 Mikhailin won the Russian championships and the student world championships. At the European Championships in 2005 , Michailin won the semi-finals against van der Geest in the heavyweight division, in the final he defeated Janusz Wojnarowicz from Poland . After winning the military world championships, he also reached the heavyweight final at the world championships in Cairo in 2005 and won the fight for gold against the Japanese Yasuyuki Muneta . At the end of 2005 he lost the final at the European Championships in the open class against Tmenow.

The years from 2006

In 2006 Michailin won the military world championships. He was team vice world champion and team European champion. At the European Championships in the open class, he won the final against the Georgian Adam Okruashvili . In 2007 he lost early at the European Heavyweight Championships against Georgian Lascha Gujejiani and won the bronze medal after three wins in the round of hope. The Russian team also won bronze at the European Team Championships. He won the final of the European Championships in the open class against the Belarusian Ihar Makarau . At the Olympic Games 2008 Tamerlan Tmenov competed for Russia, Mikhailin won the bronze medal at the World Team Championships. In 2013, Michailin finished fifth at the World Championships in Rio de Janeiro , the Russian team won the silver medal behind the Georgians. In 2014 Mikhailin became vice European champion with the team. After a few weaker years, Mikhailin won the World Cup tournament in Sofia in early 2018, it was his 15th victory at a World Cup tournament.
