Alexander Nehr
Alexander Nehr (born January 30, 1855 in Baja , Voivodeship Serbia and Temeser Banat ; † February 29, 1928 in Vienna ) was a Hungarian-German Austrian art locksmith and art blacksmith , whose best-known work is the Viennese town hall man .
Life
Alexander Nehr was the son of Johann and Theresia Nehr. His father was a master brewer and owner of a brewery. After attending secondary school in Fünfkirchen, he learned the locksmith's trade there. He then moved to Vienna as a journeyman in 1873 and worked in renowned locksmiths such as B. with the kuk court, building and art locksmith Valerian Gillar. In addition, he trained as a draftsman and modeler in technical schools. Among other things, he was also involved in the construction of the rotunda and in the manufacture of the doors of the Burgtheater for the imperial and royal palace locksmith Albert Milde .
In 1882 Nehr was recommended to master locksmith Ludwig Wilhelm by Friedrich Schmidt , the architect of the Vienna City Hall. In his locksmith's shop at Hahngasse 8-10, Nehr worked as a foreman in six months to create the Vienna City Hall Man, which Wilhelm gave to the City of Vienna as a gift. Armor from Emperor Maximilian I served as a model for the armor .
After the completion of the town hall man, Nehr was one of the most famous locksmiths of his time. The success enabled him to open his own workshop at Porzellangasse 20 in 1883 , and thanks to the good order situation he was able to employ up to 50 workers in the following period. From 1889 he had his workshop at Spittelauergasse 4 (today Althanstraße 49), the house at Porzellangasse 20 was demolished in the early 1890s. As a construction and art locksmith he made “iron constructions, ornamental building and art locksmith work, etc. between: stair and balcony railings, gates, grave bars, lanterns, lustres, girandols, flower tables, armor, figures, standard bearers. "
In 1887 Nehr married Theresia Bräuer from Klagenfurt. In addition to four daughters, they also had two sons, Alexander (* September 7, 1897) and Ludwig (* February 9, 1900), who learned the art of metalworking from their father and continued the business. In 1929 Alexander Nehr jun. cease operations due to a lack of orders. As an art fitter, however, he continued to carry out restorations for the buildings managed by the castle administration.
Nehr took part in exhibitions in Vienna and exhibited his work in Chicago, Paris, St. Louis, Liège and Glasgow, among others. In 1900 he was appointed as a member of the committee in the cooperative of Viennese master locksmiths, he was also a member of the arts and crafts association and the Lower Austrian trade association as well as a court-sworn appraiser and expert.
In recognition of his achievements, he has received several awards and honors. His grave is in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 70, No. 100).

- Five copies of armor from the armory of Ambras Castle for King Ludwig II of Bavaria . (Mid-1880s)
- Entrance gate to the house at Porzellangasse 20, built in the early 1890s, the successor to Nehr's former workshop. (Today this gate is in the Alsergrund district museum.)
- Entrance gate for the Austria pavilion at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900. (He received a gold medal for this work.)
- Dome and lattice for the Empress Elisabeth Memorial Church on Hochschneeberg. Collaboration on the dome construction and the gallery grid. (1900/01)
- Memorial for the fallen of the Imperial and Royal Infantry Regiment Hoch and Deutschmeister No. 4 in the Battle of Königgrätz in Rozběřice (Rosberschitz) . (1902)
- Consular Academy (architect Ludwig Baumann ; today US Embassy, Boltzmanngasse 16. 1903/04)
- For the Neue Burg in Vienna, Nehr performed numerous services over the years, such as window grilles, stair railings, fireplace doors and other locksmith work, such as shelf parts for the court library and the unmistakable imperial crown crowning the double eagle on the attic of the Neue Burg. From 1906 Ludwig Baumann took over the construction management.
- Working for the imperial family in the Schönbrunn palaces and in the Belvedere .
- Extension for the Museum of Applied Arts in Weiskirchnerstrasse 3 by Ludwig Baumann. (1907/08)
- Drifting work for the balcony railing of the Palais of the French Embassy in Vienna. (1908/09)
- Entrance gate to the churchyard of the parish church Kahlenbergerdorf . (This work by Nehr was a donation to the community; 1909)
- Entrance gate to the family crypt of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Artstetten Castle . The architect of this crypt was again Ludwig Baumann, with whom Nehr had often worked. (1914/15)
