Aleksandr Tvardovsky ( Russian Александр Трифонович Твардовский , scientific. Transliteration Aleksandr Trifonovič Tvardovski * 8 . Jul / 21st June 1910 greg. At the farm Sagorje, Smolensk ; † 18th December 1971 at Krasnaya Pakhra River , Moscow Oblast , today Troitsk (Moscow) ) was a Soviet poet.
life and work
Alexander Twardowski was born in 1910 as the son of a blacksmith. After completing the fourth grade, he left school due to material difficulties. At home he ran away twice because he was dissatisfied with the rural way of life.
In 1924 Twardowski joined the Komsomol , three years later he became a member of the Association of Proletarian Writers (RAPP). He devoted himself entirely to literature.
His first works were published in Red Army newspapers in Smolensk Oblast . In his poems Путь к социализму ( The Road to Socialism , 1931) and Страна Муравия ( The Land of Murawija , 1934–1936), he glorified the collectivization of Soviet agriculture . He had been a member of the Communist Party since 1938 and took part as political commissar in the occupation of eastern Poland and in the Finnish-Soviet winter war.
His poem Василий Тёркин ( Wassili Tjorkin , 1941–1945) is considered an example of contemporary Soviet ideas about poetry.
As editor-in-chief of the Moscow literary magazine Nowy Mir (New World), Twardowski had the story A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich by the still unknown author Alexander Solzhenitsyn printed in the autumn of 1962 .
His parents fell victim to the deculakization ; a loss that Twardowski accepted in silence and from which he suffered until the end of his life.
The asteroid (3261) Tvardovskij , discovered on September 22, 1979, has been named after him since 1988.
