Oleg Alexandrovich Yuryev

Oleg Alexandrowitsch Jurjew ( Russian Олег Александрович Юрьев ; born July 28, 1959 in Leningrad , Soviet Union ; † July 5, 2018 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a Russian and German poet , novelist , playwright , essayist and translator .

life and work

Oleg Jurjew was born in Leningrad in 1959 as the son of a university teacher for English and a violinist and conservatory professor. In 1982 he graduated from the Leningrad University of Economics and Finance, majoring in business mathematics and systems theory .

He wrote his first poem in 1970. In the seventies and eighties, poetry was his main occupation. From 1984 he wrote plays, from the late 1980s also essays and book reviews and from 1992 he also wrote prose. In the final phase of the Soviet Union, he earned his living by translating mainly from English and by writing children's stories and poems. In 1988 he won the competition of the Russian Theater Association with his play Comical Stories for Shadow Theater. This was followed by productions and publications of his plays in Russia. In 1989 the first volume of poetry, Poems about the Heavenly Sentence , was published, and in 1990 a book with two plays entitled Two Short Pieces .

In 1991 Oleg Jurjew moved to Germany with his family; since then he has lived in Frankfurt am Main. A year later, three plays, Little Pogrom in the Railway Station Buffet , Miriam and Sulamith or The Children of Jerusalem , were translated into German and staged by German theaters. This was followed by productions of his pieces in the Czech Republic, Poland, France, Switzerland and the Ukraine, as well as publications of his works in the national languages. A first volume of prose with the title Walks under the hollow moon appeared in Russia in 1993 and was nominated for the Russian Booker Prize. A year later, a selection appeared in German translation under the title Leningrad Stories . In 1996 he published the prose volume Der Frankfurter Stier in Russian , which was published in German in the same year. The novel Peninsula Judatin was published in Germany in 1999 . The Russian edition was nominated for the Russian Booker Prize and the National Best Seller Prize in 2000. In the same year Jurjew received the scholarship from the Baltic Center for Authors and Translators in Visby, Sweden .

At the beginning of the nineties, Jurjew translated some plays and radio plays from German into Russian and began to write journalistic and literary contributions for radio stations and newspapers in the USA, Israel, France and Germany. His texts in German have been translated from Russian as well as by the author in German. From 2006 to 2013, Jurjew had his own column , Jurjew's Classic , in the Berlin Tagesspiegel . In 2002 the novel Walks under the Hollow Moon was published by edition suhrkamp , and a year later, also by Suhrkamp , the novel The New Golem or The War of Children and Old People . The poetry volumes Selected Poems and Choirs (2004) and Der Abendschuß zu Frankfurt (2007) followed, both of which are not yet available in German transmission. In general, Juryev's poems, apart from a few publications in the magazines manuskripte , Die Horen und Fahrtläufer , are little known to the German public, although they form a key element of his work. In the late 2000s he published the volume Twenty Facets of Russian Nature with pictures by Kusma Petrow-Vodkin (2008) at Insel Verlag and the novel Die Russische Freight (2009) by Suhrkamp . In 2017, Unknown Briefe, his first novel written in German, was published by Verbrecher Verlag . Since January 2017 appeared in the RUT every month his column Jurjews finds .

His poems have been translated into German, French, English, Italian and Bulgarian, and his plays and prose texts have been translated into German, English, French, Czech, Polish and Bulgarian.

In 2010 Jurjew received the Hilde Domin Prize for literature in exile in Heidelberg, endowed with 15,000 euros .

Oleg Jurjew lived in Frankfurt am Main. He was married to the poet and prose writer Olga Martynova . From this marriage comes a son (* 1988). Yuryev died in July 2018 at the age of 58.
