Life

Miller has Russian-German roots and was born in Leningrad, today's Saint Petersburg . Until 1984 he studied at the Vosnesensky Institute for Finance and Economics . In 1991 Miller initially worked for the mayor of his hometown and for many years worked closely with the former vice mayor and current Russian President Vladimir Putin . Since that time together, Miller has been a confidante of Putin, who is also from St. Petersburg. In 1996 Miller took over the management of the St. Petersburg port . This was followed in 1999 as General Director of the Baltic Pipeline Systems . In 2000 he became Deputy Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation.

In May 2001, Miller was appointed CEO of Gazprom by Vladimir Putin. Miller replaced Rem Vyachirew from his position and initiated a restrictive restructuring of the group. From the state-owned energy company, Miller developed a multi-layered multicompany that, as the world's largest energy supplier, is an effective instrument of global Russian foreign policy. In the first five years since Miller's entry, Gazprom's stock market value rose from $ 9.8 billion to now $ 300 billion and in 2006 was the third most valuable company in the world after General Electric and ExxonMobil . After the global financial and economic crises, Gazprom's market value as of May 2016 was 58 billion dollars. According to journalist Jens Hartmann of the daily newspaper Die Welt, the Gazprom conglomerate under Miller's leadership dominates large parts of the Russian economy.

Because of his position, Miller is considered one of the most powerful people in Russia. The Forbes magazine listed him in 2013 for the first time among the most powerful people in the world . In February 2016, Miller's Gazprom contract was extended for a further five years until 2021.
