Alfons Thoma

Alfons Thoma (born March 13, 1917 , † September 4, 2011 in Bonn ) was a German railway engineer .

biography

Thoma received his doctorate in 1956 from the Technical University of Darmstadt and then accepted a position at the Deutsche Bundesbahn . Later he was responsible for the construction of new lines in the Federal Ministry of Transport for nine years before he was President of the Munich Federal Railway Directorate from 1977 to 1982 . Under his direction, the marshalling yard in Munich-North and the container terminal in Riem were built.

After the end of his career, Thoma volunteered in the transport and technology sector. From 1985 to 2005 he was chairman of the Society for Rational Transport Policy (GRV) and from 1987 to 1995 of the District Association of Southern Bavaria of the German Transport Science Society . He played a key role in converting the congress hall of the Deutsches Museum from a concert hall to a technology forum with planetarium and IMAX cinema , which opened in 1993 . In 2007 the garden lover finally published a flower book.

Thoma has received numerous awards for his work, including the Bavarian Order of Merit , the Great Austrian Order of Merit and the Munich Shines Medal . He was an honorary senator of the Technical University of Munich .

Thoma died in Bonn in 2011 at the age of 94.
