Alfonso Michele Litta (born September 19, 1608 in Milan , † August 28, 1679 in Rome ) was Archbishop of Milan and Cardinal .

Life

Family background

Alfonso Michele Litta, his full name, came from a noble Milanese family that produced another cardinal in the 19th century, Lorenzo Litta .

Early years

Even in his youth, Litta's health was not at its best. He studied in Salamanca and Bologna and finally received minor orders from Federico Borromeo , the then Archbishop of Milan. Then Litta worked at the Vatican court in Rome and was governor in various cities . As governor of Camerino in 1639 he met the local bishop Emilio Altieri, later Pope Clement X , and was soon friends with him. In 1643 he was a papal vice delegate in Bologna , Ferrara and Emilia-Romagna . It was not until 1648, when he was almost forty, that he was ordained a priest .

Archbishop of Milan and Cardinal

On June 17, 1652 Alfonso Litta was finally appointed Archbishop of Milan, a week later, on 24 June 1652, received his Cardinal Giulio Roma the episcopal ordination , co-consecrators were Giovanni Battista Spada , Titularpatriarch of Konstantin Opel , and Carlo Carafa , Bishop of Aversa . He held a total of 15 synods , including two large ones (1658 and 1669).

Pope Alexander VII made him cardinal in pectore on January 14, 1664 . It was not publicly announced until 1666. As a cardinal priest, Litta received the titular church of S. Croce in Gerusalemme . He took part in the conclaves of 1667 and 1669-1670 . Despite his poor health, he traveled to Rome on the occasion of the jubilee year 1675 and a year later took part in the conclave that Innocent XI. chose.

death

Alfonso Litta died on August 28, 1679 and was initially buried in the church of San Carlo al Corso in Rome. Only later were his bones transferred to Milan. His grave, which he himself designed, is in the Milan Cathedral .
