Giambattista Spada
Giambattista Spada (born August 28, 1597 in Lyon , † January 23, 1675 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal and patriarch.
biography
He comes from a noble family from Lucca and was a nephew of Cardinal Bernardino Spada .
In 1606 he was sent to Rome, where he was instructed by his uncle Giambattista Spada, an avvocato concistoriale .
During the pontificate of Paul V , he entered the Roman Curia in 1618 as Avvocato Concistoriale . From 1624 to 1629 he was secretary of the Congregazione del Buon Governo ; In 1630 he was appointed secretary of the Congregazione di Sanità . From 1635 to 1643 he was governor of Rome. During the pontificate of Urban VIII he was Secretary of State in the succession of Cardinal Francesco Adriano Ceva . During the pontificate of Innocent X , he was also rector of La Sapienza University .
On August 3, 1643 he was named titular patriarch of Constantinople and on August 23 of the same year he was ordained bishop by Cardinal Marcantonio Franciotti . From 1644 he was President of the Province of Romagna.
In the consistory of March 2, 1654, he was appointed cardinal by Pope Innocent X and on March 23 of the same year he was given the titular church of Santa Susanna . From 1654 to 1657 he was Papal Legate of Ferrara . On January 27, 1659 he decided on the titular church of San Marcello and on September 25, 1673 for San Crisogono .
He took part in the conclave 1655 , the conclave 1667 and the conclave 1669-1670 , in which the Popes Alexander VII. , Clement IX. and Clemens X. were elected.
He died in Rome and was buried in the church of Santa Croce e San Bonaventura dei Lucchesi .
