Alfred Grund

Alfred Grund (born August 3, 1875 in Prague-Smíchov ; † November 11, 1914 in Smederevo in Serbia) was an Austrian geographer and geologist.

Life

Alfred Grund studied geography and history at the University of Vienna . In 1899, he was based on the dissertation Topographic changes between Traisen and Leitha and its causes to Dr. phil. PhD . From 1901 he was a volunteer at the court library . In 1903 he became an assistant at the Geographical Institute of the University of Vienna and in 1904 a private lecturer in geography. In 1907 he switched to the University of Berlin as an associate professor and expanded the oceanographic laboratory as a department head of the institute. In 1910, as the successor to Oskar Lenz (1848–1925), who retired in 1909 , he became professor of geography at the Karl Ferdinand University in Prague.

The term karst water comes from his work on karst hydrography . He was also head of the Hydrographic Service from 1911 to 1914. As this he made all twelve trips of the SMS Najade in the Adriatic but also as far as Norway.

In 1914, Grund had to enter and fell in battle near Belgrade .
