Alfred Macalik

Alfred Macalik (born September 10, 1888 in Vienna , † September 20, 1979 in Oradea ) was an Austrian - Romanian landscape painter , graphic artist , sculptor , double bass player and composer .

Life

Early years

After Macalik the middle school in Baia Mare ended, he studied at the advice of his art teacher Szoke Gyula 1910-1911 at the Jan-Matejko Academy of Fine Arts Krakow under Teodor Axentowicz as well as from the years 1914 to 1918 at the Academy in Budapest . There he was also a student of the painter Béla Endre . In 1913 Macalik received a scholarship from the Szolnok Art Colony , which was founded by the painter Ludovic Hegheduș. After completing his army service in 1919, Macalik's first exhibitions took place. He painted a wide variety of motifs and with dark colors. In the twenties he was accepted into the artists' colony in Baia Mare. Here he took pleasure in landscape painting; his color scheme became more romanticized and increasingly lighter than before.

Time after 1930

Alfred Macalik settled in Oradea and in the years to come grew to become the most important person in Oradea's cultural life in the 20th century. He decisively shaped the local culture. In 1930 Macalik opened a private art school. However, it only lasted seven years. He then gave classes at the elementary school for fine arts in Oradea. When the Asociația Artelor Frumoase was founded in Oradea, Macalik also took part in the gathering of visual artists and was given a high post, namely that of Artistic Director , in the association and took part in its exhibitions. Numerous literary and artistic greats were portrayed by him. As a professor, he is also valued in debates about art and aesthetics . In addition to his talents in painting, Macalik was also gifted as a poet , musician and composer in classical music . He was one of the founders of the Oradea State Philharmonic . There he also played the double bass as a member . In 1938 he met the painter Corneliu Baba . Works by him can be found in the Muzeul Țării Crișurilor . The museum dedicated an extensive retrospective to him in 1966. In 2006 his death city dedicated a street to him in the center. The former "Strada Pârâului" has been renamed into the current "Strada Alfred Macalik" . Macalik's work has been shown in over 200 exhibitions worldwide. His oeuvre includes over 1700 works.

Painting style

Alfred Macalik's style can be classified between post-impressionism and expressionism . Contrasts in the choice of color, romanticizing depiction as well as a lively and uncontoured brushwork give the work a tremendous dynamic.
