Alfred E. Schlomann (born August 10, 1878 in Malchow ; † March 31, 1952 in New York ) was a German engineer and terminologist .

Life

Schlomann was the third son of the Jewish merchant family Hermann (1839–1913) and Friederike (1840–1913) Schlohmann, who, together with the brothers August and Heinrich, ran a shop for cloth, manufactured goods and fashion goods in Malchow. After attending school at the former Realgymnasium in Bützow (now Geschwister-Scholl-Gymnasium) Schlomann first studied at the Kgl. Techn. Hochschule zu Berlin, then from October 1903 to October 1904 at the University of Rostock Physics and " Cameralia ", finally in Munich. He then became an engineer in a Bavarian machine factory and, after the First World War, a consulting engineer in the Bavarian Ministry of Commerce. In 1932 he was awarded the degree of "Honorary Doctor" from the Technical University of Berlin.

In 1937 he emigrated to New York with his wife and children. After the Second World War , he returned to Germany to work as a translator at the Nuremberg war crimes trials . He died in New York at the age of 73.

Terminologist

Schlomann was the editor of a number of six-language illustrated technical dictionaries in German, English, French, Russian, Italian and Spanish, which were published in 17 volumes by R. Oldenbourg (then Munich and Berlin ) from 1906 . The technical terms were not arranged alphabetically, but in groups according to the context in connection with alphabetical indices according to languages. The core element of the concept was also a large number of technical drawings of the defined terms, so that the “dictionaries” (actually terminologies) were also helpful for users of other languages. So were z. B. translated some volumes into Czech and into the planned languages Esperanto and Ido . Eugen Wüster , who is considered to be the founder of modern terminology , mentioned Schlomann very often in his basic work Internationale Sprachnormung in der Technik (1931) and felt strongly influenced by him.

In addition, Schlomann took over the publication of the fully revised 6th edition 1932 of the trilingual technical dictionary German, English, French by Egbert von Hoyer and Franz Kreuter, which was last published in the 5th edition in 1903.

Auditing

When the new professional profile of the auditor was established at the end of the 1920s , Schlomann worked in cooperation with the Association of Consulting Engineers to ensure that the relevant work of the engineers was given due consideration.
