Alice McKennis (born August 19, 1989 in Glenwood Springs , Colorado ) is an American ski racer . Your strongest disciplines are downhill and super-G .
Career
McKennis competed in her first FIS races in August 2004 , and has been regularly competing in the Nor-Am Cup since winter 2005/06 . In the next season she achieved her first top 10 result in this racing series in a Super-G in Panorama and in the 2007/08 season she was already in the top ten five times. In February 2008 she took part in a Junior World Championship for the first time in Formigal, Spain . She was rated in all competitions and achieved ninth place in the downhill as the best result.
On December 5, 2008 McKennis started in the downhill from Lake Louise for the first time in the World Cup . But she only reached the 51st place and this season this was her only World Cup race. Shortly afterwards she made her breakthrough in the Nor-Am Cup : Within a few days she won both season runs and two Super-Gs. In the other Super-Gs she reached fourth place twice and thus won both the downhill and the Super-G classification, which gave her a fixed starting place in the World Cup for the next season in these disciplines. At the Junior World Championships in Garmisch-Partenkirchen in 2009 , she was fourth in the downhill and just missed a medal by two hundredths of a second.
At the beginning of December 2009 McKennis was able to score points in the World Cup for the first time. In the first downhill of the 2009/10 season in Lake Louise, she finished 18th with starting number 49. The next day she achieved her first top 10 result with tenth place in the second downhill. She started in the downhill at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver , but was disqualified. On January 2, 2011 McKennis suffered a fracture of the shin plateau during Super-G training in Saalbach-Hinterglemm . The 2010/11 season ended prematurely for them. When she made her comeback at the beginning of the 2011/12 season , McKennis achieved her best ever World Cup result with eighth place in the first downhill run from Lake Louise. She was able to improve this result at the end of the season in Schladming with seventh place in the downhill.
In the 2012/13 season McKennis first reached another top 10 place as eighth on the downhill from Val-d'Isère , before celebrating her first World Cup victory on January 12, 2013 in the downhill from St. Anton . Almost two months later, the season ended prematurely for her after she fell on the descent from Garmisch-Partenkirchen on March 2 and broke her right tibia.
In December 2013 she came back to the World Cup via the Nor-Am Cup and two top 10 placements there. As the 43rd, however, she followed the competition on the descent in Val-d'Isère, France . It was her last international start of the season. At the beginning of the 2014/15 season , she was 28th again collecting World Cup points in Lake Louise. In the second downhill race the following day, she also achieved the points in 18th place. In January she just barely missed the top 10 as 11th of the downhill run from Cortina. In March McKennis was US champion in the Super-G. In February 2017 McKennis won two Downhill races at Copper Mountain as part of the Nor-Am Cup . She also celebrated two more podium places in the Super-G.
The 2017/18 season began for McKennis with a 24th place in Lake Louise. With rank 11 in Cortina, she achieved her best result of the season a few weeks later. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , which she returned to after being canceled due to injury in 2014, she finished in fifth place in the downhill in the Super-G in 16th place. She finished the World Cup season a little later in 45th place in the overall World Cup ranking. Shortly after the end of the season, McKennis fell while training young skiers at the American downhiller camp in Mammoth Mountain and sustained several fractures. The severity of the injury meant that McKennis did not take part in any international races in the 2018/19 World Cup season. However , the US ski association has announced its comeback for the 2019/20 season . She has been training again since April 2019.
