Aljaksandr Uladsimerawitsch Milinkewitsch (born July 25, 1947 in the Hrodsenskaya Woblasz , Belarusian SSR ) is a Belarusian politician and physicist .

Alyaksandr Milinkevich comes from the family of a teacher. His great-grandfather took part in the Polish January uprising in 1863-64 and was repressed by the Russian army. His grandfather was an activist in the Belarusian national movement in the 1920s.

In 1965 Milinkevich graduated from school with honors. In 1969 he graduated from the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of the Hrodna Pedagogical Institute . Until 1972 he worked as a teacher, later, after defending his doctoral thesis, he was a scientist at the Belarusian Academy of Sciences.

In 1976 he received his doctorate with a doctoral thesis on the “Mechanism of Generating Excessive Laser Pulses ”. Milinkevich returned to Hrodna and worked there as an engineer and professor. From 1978 to 2000 he was a lecturer at the Faculty of Physics at the University of Hrodna . From 1980 to 1984 Milinkevich was head of the chair of physics at the University of Sétif in Algeria . Milinkevich was later visiting professor at the Universities of Montpellier ( France ) and the University of California ( USA ).

Alyaksandr Milinkevich is married and has two children.

Civil service

From 1990 to 1996 Milinkevich was deputy mayor of the city of Hrodna. He dealt with issues of education, health, youth, sport, the media, religion and monuments. From 1996 he was chairman of the non-governmental organization "Ratuscha" in Hrodna, which was banned by the government in 2003. From 2001 Milinkevich was chief of staff of the presidential candidate of the united opposition, Sjamjon Domasch . Since 2003 he has been the program director of the Foundation for the Promotion of Regional Development.

On October 2, 2005, the Belarusian opposition parties nominated Alyaksandr Milinkevich as their joint candidate for the 2006 presidential election on March 19. Some observers expected that his (promising) candidacy could be forbidden by President Lukashenka with legal tricks; However, through political visits to Russia and EU countries (including on February 2, 2006 with Chancellor Merkel and Federal Foreign Minister Steinmeier), he successfully sought political support against it. According to observers, his competitors Aljaksandr Kasulin and Sjarhej Hajdukewitsch had no real chance of voting.

At the end of April 2006, Milinketvich was arrested for “calling for civil disobedience” after a large opposition rally on the 20th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster and sentenced to 15 days in prison. He himself spoke of a politically motivated process.

Public and scientific work

Milinkevich is known as a historian and regional scientist. For ten years he was the author of a program on the history of his region on Hrodna TV. On the initiative of Milinkevich, the Hrodna clock tower - one of the oldest clocks in Europe (15th - 16th centuries) - was restored. Milinkevich was the initiator of the search and research of the remains of the grave of the last king of Poland-Lithuania Stanislaus II August Poniatowski .

1968-1969 Milinkevich was Belarusian champion in basketball . 1996–1997 he was president of the basketball club Hrodna-93 . Milinkevich is the author of 65 scientific works on quantum electronics, laser technology, history, culture, education and architecture of Belarus.
