Alkmar (III.) Von Alvensleben (born October 7, 1874 in Schollene ; † August 30, 1946 in Wernigerode ) was chief medical officer and director of the state women's clinic in Magdeburg .

Life

Alkmar von Alvensleben came from the Low German noble family von Alvensleben . After attending the village school in Schollene and the grammar schools in Stendal and Wernigerode , where he passed the Abitur in 1894, he studied law in Göttingen , Munich and Berlin . In 1897 he passed the trainee examination and worked as a trainee lawyer in Gardelegen from January to April 1898 . He then started studying medicine in Freiburg im Breisgau and Kiel . In July 1902, he was the medical state examination and in March 1904 received his doctorate he became Dr. med. in Freiburg.

From 1902 to 1904 Alkmar von Alvensleben worked as an assistant doctor at the municipal hospital in Konstanz and then for six weeks as a ship's doctor for the North German Lloyd . From 1904 to 1905 he worked as a trainee doctor at the University Women's Clinic of the Charité in Berlin. From 1905 to 1909 he was trained as an assistant doctor at the University Clinic in Kiel by Professors Werth and Pfannenstiel as a gynecologist. On June 1, 1909, Alkmar von Alvensleben was entrusted by the Provincial Committee of the Province of Saxony with the medical management of the state women's clinic in Magdeburg by the governor Freiherr von Wilmowski. During the First World War, he was employed as a physician who was obliged to take part in the Landsturm in various auxiliary hospitals in Magdeburg as an ordinating surgeon in addition to his work as director of the state women's clinic .

Although he was lively drawn to the natural sciences from childhood, family tradition initially stood in the way of embarking on a professional career. Only after completing his law degree, with his father's approval, was he able to start studying medicine and thus, after studying law, which was unsatisfactory for him, strive for the life profession that was appropriate for him. As director of the state women's clinic in Magdeburg, he found a happy and rich opportunity to practice his art, not only as a medical advisor and surgeon, but also as an obstetric teacher.

Alkmar von Alvensleben was a son of the landowner Udo III. von Alvensleben (1823–1910) and Agnes von Pritzelwitz (1835–1911) and had twelve siblings. He married Martha Leonhard (* February 7, 1885 - March 29, 1963), widow of Captain Alfred Nowack, who fell on September 17, 1914, daughter of the factory owner Max Leonhard and his wife Margarethe, née Kauffmann, and had three sons with her.
