Alkmar II von Alvensleben (born September 16, 1841 in Weteritz , † November 10, 1898 in Naumburg ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and commandant of Breslau .

Life

origin

Alkmar came from the Low German noble family von Alvensleben . He was the youngest child of Chamberlain Wilhelm Graf von Alvensleben-Isenschnibbe (1798-1853) from Weteritz and his wife Auguste, née Countess von Osten-Sacken (1804-1890). She was chief stewardess to Princess Maria Anna of Prussia . He had twelve siblings, including the Prussian Lieutenant General Friedrich von Alvensleben (1837-1894).

Military career

After attending grammar school in Stendal and the cadet schools in Potsdam and Berlin , he came - not yet eighteen - on May 17, 1859, as a characterized porter ensign, to the Guard Jäger Battalion of the Prussian Army in Potsdam. In mid-April 1860 he advanced to secondary lieutenant, took part in the battles at Thrush , Queen's Court and Königgrätz during the war against Austria in 1866 and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, fourth class with swords. In February 1867 Alvensleben was promoted to prime lieutenant and in 1870/71 took part in the war against France at St. Privat , Beaumont , Sedan and Paris .

Awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class, he became a captain and company commander in April 1871 after the war . On March 22, 1881 he was transferred to the 4th Guards Regiment on foot . At the end of August 1881 he rose to major and was from December 6, 1883 to October 13, 1884 commander of the 2nd battalion. This was followed by a job as commander of the Magdeburg Jäger Battalion No. 4 . In this position Alvensleben became lieutenant colonel in early August 1888 , until he was promoted to colonel on September 20, 1890, when he was given command of the grenadier regiment "Prince Carl von Prussia" (2nd Brandenburg) No. 12 in Frankfurt (Oder) . As a major general, he was then from May 14, 1894 to September 11, 1896 commander of the 2nd Guard Infantry Brigade in Berlin and then commander of Breslau. In this position, Alvensleben received the character of Lieutenant General on January 27, 1898. He was also awarded the Order of the Red Eagle II. Class with oak leaves and swords on the ring and the Order of the Crown II. Class with a star.

For health reasons, however, he had to take a leave of absence and retired to Naumburg, where he died at the age of 57. His body was transferred to the family cemetery in Polvitz.

family

On December 27, 1890, he married Mechthild von Alvensleben (1850–1941) from the Schochwitz family . She was the daughter of Lieutenant General Hermann von Alvensleben (1809–1887) and sister of Major General Ludolf von Alvensleben (1844–1912). The son Wilhelm Hermann (* 1894) emerged from the marriage.
