history

Alkofen emerged from the efforts of the Bavarian Elector to “peupel” his lands, that is, to create settler positions on public land, small farms that were supposed to support a family. Before 1800 there were only the hamlets of Alkofen, Daxlarn, Dorf, some solitary farms and the large Schweiklgut. Between these rural settlements four colonies were established after 1800 : Hennermais, Thannet, Schullering west of Alkofen, Pleckental east of it. For the Pleckenthal colony, 48 days of work , the Electoral Wood Ground in Plaickenthal, were planned, which were to be parceled out and sold to those willing to settle. At the auction, however, a Vilshofen brewer and the owner of the Schweiklhof struck and each bought half. They paid between 20 and 60 guilders per hectare and in the following years sold the land in small plots, most of them only half a hectare in size, taking up to 200 guilders for the hectare. In 1829 59 families lived on 40 hectares of farmland on as many properties. Thus Pleckental had a much higher population density than the city of Vilshofen. A report by the government of the Lower Danube District from 1816 shows how difficult the social conditions were shortly after the colonies were founded: “Everything is teeming with people. Half begs, a quarter steals! ”This is where the negative consequences of the abolition of manorial rule became visible. In 1873 Pleckental was given its own gendarmerie station , which was quite unusual for a rural gendarmerie . A school was built in Alkofen in 1835 for the purpose of elevating morality. Even if Pleckental tried to trigger a socialist revolution in Vilshofen in 1918 , the situation improved after the last war. The problems have largely disappeared. On May 1, 1978, Alkofen was incorporated into the town of Vilshofen on the Danube .

On November 2, 1893, the Alkofen Expositur was elevated to a parish and in December the Alkofen population used their own parish church for the first time. Finally, on April 15, 1902, the parish church was consecrated by Bishop Anton von Henle from Passau. From afar you can already see the brick parish church. Right next to the parish church is the rectory and the parish center, which is used for a number of events. In 2006 the parishes of Alkofen and Pleinting were merged into one parish association.

Maria Bründl Chapel

The Bründl Chapel (2012)

The name of the Maria Bründl chapel, built in 1843, comes from the spring that is taken behind the church and directed to the fountain in front of the church. The spring, which was known long before the chapel was built, has been said to have healing powers since ancient times. The medicinal water soothes and heals eye problems. An entry from the parish chronicle tells of an incident that is probably part of the realm of legends: around 1900, a school boy is said to have cut off all the fingers of the carved Madonna in the Bundlkapelle, a woman is said to have called the Madonna "inhandl" for this reason and therefore later gave birth to a child with just one hand.
