action

The divorced Katharina Remminger lives in an alpine village in Bavaria . One day she receives the message from her son Hans, who is studying architecture in Berlin , that he would like to marry Nicki shortly. Since Katharina has never seen Nicki and assumes that it is a female first name, she falls from the clouds when Nicki turns out to be a man. So far she has never dealt with homosexuality and therefore does not know how to react. Without further ado, she puts Nicki and Hans in front of the door.

Both move into the village pension and the next morning a villager watches them kissing. Soon it was known throughout the village that Hans was homosexual, and all of the villagers' prejudices came to light. Hans' father Christian also initially refuses to accept his son's homosexuality. In the course of the film, however, he and his ex-wife Katharina get closer and realize that their son has found the love of his life and that they actually don't care that it is a man.

Katharina relentlessly demonstrates her mendaciousness to her fellow village choir members and Christian realizes that his second wife Vera has spread a lie: She claimed that Christian was not Hans's biological father because she fears that the customers will be disrupted because of her stepson's homosexuality could avoid their new dealership. In a rage, Katharina knocks Vera down and goes to Berlin with Christian to assure Hans and his friend of hers and Christian's complete solidarity.

Later the villagers let Katharina's words go through their heads again and Hans and Nicki can get married at the Dorfalm as planned. Everyone treats them to happiness and the village choir sings “ All You Need Is Love ” for both of them .

criticism

The film service rated All You Need Is Love - my daughter-in-law is a man as a comedy, "which tries to achieve thematic depth, even if the subject has long since lost much of its former explosiveness."

Queerlive says that director Edzard Onneken succeeds in a funny way, “to show the double standards in the small town. One can well imagine how prejudices against the issue of homosexuality are still prevalent in many areas, including Germany. From our years of work we know how homos fare in rural areas, so the plot is realistic. "

background

The shooting took place from May 2009 in Bad Bayersoien in Upper Bavaria and in Munich. In contrast to the film villagers at the beginning, the real villagers were open to the project. “Even when they knew what 'All you need is Love - My daughter-in-law is a man', they were incredibly friendly and helpful. Obviously, they were just happy that we were filming in their location, ”says producer Frank Kaminski.

At the time of filming, the possibility of entering into a registered civil partnership at the registry office and with the help of its officials was only possible through the legislative process; there was only the possibility of entering into a notary. The FDP introduced the draft law in December 2008, it was passed on July 1, 2009 and came into force on August 1.
