The city was founded in 1870 as a railroad stop for the Houston and Texas Railroad as a loading facility for the surrounding farms. The city was named after the Texas attorney general and promoter of the railway construction Ebenezer Allen . The first post office opened in 1876, and in 1878 a band of robbers led by Sam Bass carried out the first railroad heist in Texas history at the station.

Until 1945, the city remained a small village with around 500 inhabitants, and in 1948 the railroad was shut down. It was not until the mid-1960s that the city expanded noticeably and from 1970 to 1980 the population rose rapidly from 1940 to 8,314. The reason for this was the proximity to Dallas and Plano and the construction of the Dallas / Fort Worth International Airport . In 1990 the city already had 18,309 inhabitants, and in the next ten years the population increased to 43,554. The estimate for the end of 2005 is around 70,000 inhabitants. At the 2010 census, 84,246 people lived in the city, twice as many as ten years earlier.

In 1967 the library was founded and run exclusively by volunteers, the costs were covered by donations. In 1971 it was subordinated to the city administration and today has 120,000 books, video and audio documents. In the 1990s, the city served as the backdrop for the outdoor recordings of the TV shows Barney & Friends and Wishbone .
