Cyclone in 2004
On January 6, 2004, cyclone Heta swept over the island and destroyed numerous Alofi buildings, including the hospital, the Niue Hotel, the museum and cultural center, the courthouse and shops for divers. Hundreds of residents were left homeless. A 24-year-old nurse died trying to protect her two-year-old child.
The rebuilding program for the island was set to run for five years. The estimated costs amounted to 23 million US dollars . It was hoped for help from New Zealand and Australia and the European Union. The Niue government decided that the destroyed shops in Alofi, the hospital and the Niue Hotel should be built on a higher plateau near Fonuakula.
