Alois J. Hochstrasser

Alois J. Hochstrasser (born April 16, 1941 in Waidhofen an der Ybbs ) is an Austrian freelance musician , conductor and a retired music professor. D. at the Johann Joseph Fux Conservatory of the State of Styria in Graz . For many years he has been in charge of the Graz Concert Choir and the Pannonian Philharmonic and is the artistic director and chairman of the interpannon concert and the Styria Classic .

Life and activity

After Hochstrasser had completed the humanistic grammar school in Stift Seitenstetten with high school diploma in 1960, he studied at the University of Vienna and the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna a . a. with Hans Gillesberger conducting and choir direction and Hans Swarowsky orchestral direction. Studies with Sergiu Celibidache followed.

From 1966 to 1971 he was Kapellmeister at Graz Cathedral . In 1971 he founded the Graz Concert Choir and took over the artistic direction of the choir-orchestra concerts in Graz and on tours. From 1968 he accepted various teaching positions at the Karl-Franzens University in Graz and taught from 1971 to 2005 at the Federal Pedagogical Academy in Styria . In addition, since 1972 he has led numerous orchestra and choir seminars for teachers and young people.

From 1975 to 2002, Hochstrasser worked as a professor for piano, choir and orchestral education and ensemble management at the Johann Joseph Fux Conservatory of Styria in Graz. He has worked as a guest conductor in many European countries, in the USA and in South Africa with orchestras such as the Philharmonia Hungarica, Erfurter Philharmonie, Lowten Philharmonic, Staatskapelle Weimar, the Zurich Opera House, Lower Austria Tonkünstler Orchestra and many more. In addition to regular concert cycles (since 1975) in Graz, in Austrian cultural centers, at various festivals and abroad, many CD and vinyl recordings document his extensive work: world premier recordings of The Book with Seven Seals by Franz Schmidt - 2003 Hungarian premiere in Budapest and The Dark Kingdom by Hans Pfitzner.

Due to his special artistic efforts around Franz Schmidt, he was given honorary citizenship of the "Franz Schmidt Community" Vienna.

In 1976 he founded the International Orchestra Weeks Erl / Tirol , a philharmonic academy, of which he was artistic director until 1998 (today “Tiroler Festspiele Erl”). Many young musicians at this academy are now members of important orchestras such as the Berlin, Vienna, Munich, and Budapest Philharmonic orchestras and others. He also founded the “Styrian Society of Music Friends” and the “Graz Symphony Orchestra” (today “Recreation”). In 1980 he was chief conductor of the Youth Philharmonic Orchestra of South Africa and since 1981 frequent guest conductor of the Budapest Youth Orchestra.

In 1982 he took over the artistic direction of the annual choir-symphonic concerts of the Hartberg Lions in the basilica of Vorau Abbey for 25 years . In 1990 he founded the International Pannonian Music Society in Graz, the inter.pannon.music.society (today interpannon concert ), an artistic interest group of the Graz Concert Choir , the Graz Concert Youth Choir and the orchestra of the Pannonian Philharmonic as an interregional cultural axis Styria-Hungary- Slovenia , as well as Graz – Budapest. Since 1997, Hochstrasser has also been the artistic director of the Upper Styrian Festival Internationale Sommerphilharmonie Leoben . Together with the orchestra of the Pannonian Philharmonic , the Graz Concert Choir , the Graz Concert Youth Choir and in partnership with other choirs from the Pannonian region and Styria, it offers a music program with symphonic and choral symphonic concerts, as well as operas, oratorios and film music.

The conductor and his musicians deal with all orchestral and choral orchestral works that are important and interesting for music history from the late Baroque to the present day. The area of ​​opera and film music is also covered. Since 2000, Hochstrasser and his ensemble have been giving concerts a. a. in Burgenland for the Güssinger cultural summer , in Lower Austria in Paudorf-Göttweig , for the romantic festival Wildalpen , for the cultural summer in Bad Aussee . In autumn 2009, Alois J. Hochstrasser founded Styria Classic , the choir-orchestra academy, which makes it its task to offer young people and adults creative musical development and opportunities to perform classical music, and of which he is the artistic director. The former Dominican monastery Dreihackengasse in Graz forms the framework for the new center for classical music .

In the 45 years of artistic activity of the musician, he has worked with numerous international soloists, singers and instrumentalists, including KS Margarita Kyriaki, KS Anton Dermota , KS Robert Holl , KS Thomas Moser , star violinist Corey Cerovsek , pianist Barbara Moser , KS Birgid Steinberger, KS Kurt Rydl , exceptional saxophonist Oto Vrhovnik and many others.
