Alpsummer (Alpsommer) is a film about life in the Alps by Thomas Horat from 2013. It was made in the Central Swiss Alps.

content

The focus is on three families who spend their lives in the Alps in the warm season and earn their living with it. That is usually only three to four months in Switzerland, the rest of the year it is too cold and there is snow. The farming families take their own animals with them for this time, but they also look after foreign cattle; others have a job the rest of the time. Alpine farming also contributes to the sustainable use of the land: the grazing animals slow down erosion and hay can be brought in for winter in the valley.

The film shows the culture of the alpine economy in which folk music and singing play an important role. The protagonists speak the local dialect of Central Switzerland . The butter and cheese production as it has been practiced for centuries is documented. Some of the Alps in the film still have no electricity today.

Traditions play an important role in the world of the Alps . This also includes traditional knowledge: “A lazy farmhand is a good cheese maker,” says one of the protagonists. He wants to express that you have to take your time in traditional cheese production . Religion also plays a role in everyday life and the Alpine blessing is said as a protective prayer every evening from a hill.

Music and sounds of nature are important in addition to music: These include, for example, the petting and bells of goats and sheep. Various protagonists appear as musicians. The folk music formation "Natur Pur" can be seen with their natural yodel .
