When the world was lost
When the world was lost (Polish: Gdy się Chrystus rodzi ; further German translation: Christ came to earth ) is a Polish Christmas carol by an unknown author, which in the translation by Gustav Kucz and also in the Polish original in 1993 into the German-language Evangelical Hymnal (EG) has been recorded.
Origin and Distribution
The result is Gdy się Chrystus rodzi in Poland before 1843, as its melody, the composer is also not known, but which has been very popular in his home country of the song. It was first printed in 1843 in Michał Mioduszewski's collection of Christmas carols, Pastorałki i kolędy z melodyjami . It is based on the biblical story of the proclamation of the birth of Christ to the shepherds in Lk 2,8-14 EU .
The Christmas carol is very popular and widespread in Poland. a. by the ensembles Mazowsze and Śląsk as well as by Teresa Żylis-Gara , Wiesław Ochman (1976), Eleni Tzoka (9186), Stanisław Sojka (1991), Mieczysław Szcześniak (1998), Anna Maria Jopek (1998), Violetta Villas (2001), Maryla Rodowicz (2001), Golec uOrkiestra (2003), Krzysztof Krawczyk (2010), Agnieszka Włodarczyk (2011), Edyta Geppert (2011) and Jacek Wójcicki (2012) recorded on phonograms.
The publisher Adolf Strube ensured the distribution in Germany when he commissioned Gustav Kucz to translate his edition of European Christmas carols in 1954 .
In 1972 Margret Birkenfeld published a new translation into German on her Christmas concept album Machet die Tore weit under the title Christ came to earth . Heidi Kirmße created a new translation in 2001, which also begins with the words "When the world is lost" but then continues differently.

The melody of the song is spread in various different versions. A melody version that is widespread today, which is also based on the version in the Evangelical Hymnal, differs in the middle section from Mioduszewski's first edition from 1843, and in this section it conspicuously corresponds to the Salzburg Christmas carol Still, still, still . Whether this match is coincidental or whether there is a connection between the songs has not yet been researched.

Gdy się Chrystus rodzi connects the story of the angel appearing on the shepherd's field with a refrain consisting of the initial words of the Gloria of the Latin Mass . Last but not least, this system has brought the song to the top of Polish Christmas carols in terms of fame and popularity.
The Polish original text begins with the birth of Christ (“When Christ was born”), while the German translation starts with the lost world (similar to O du cheerful (EG 44): “World was lost, Christ was born”) . But now the angelic song shines in the darkness of the lost world, in whose chorus the song singer with the Gloria is, as it were, accepted: Gloria in excelsis Deo! The biblical narrative comes down to this hymn of praise and is now reinforced in the song - after the angels have asked the shepherds to hurry to Bethlehem - in the second stanza.
While in the Polish form and in the Kucz translation the song is understood as angelic song, in the Evangelical Hymnbook (EG 53) it is given the form of a shepherd's song by adding a third stanza dated 1988 (the author remains anonymous). So the Gloria der Engel sounds in the chorus directly with the child in the crib.
Because the song in the Protestant hymn book is also printed with the Polish text, the Gloria can also be heard bilingually in church services and thus carry the popular popularity of the Polish song in the German-speaking area.
