Despite her international success, Violetta Villas was a very controversial person. Many were bothered by her unnatural, bombastic and kitschy appearance and criticized her alcohol and morphine addiction. The uncovering of her secret activities as an informant for the SB (Stasi 1956-90 in Poland) under the code name Gabriella hurt her even more . Eventually, a delusional disorder led her to complete isolation because she largely avoided everyone during the last years of her life.

Violetta Villas was the recipient of the prestigious Gloria Artis Medal for cultural merit . She is an honorary citizen of Lewin Kłodzki (Poland) and New Britain (Connecticut) in the USA.

Life

Childhood and Adolescence (1938-59)

Violetta Villas (real name Czesława Maria Cieślak ) was born in 1938 in the Clinique Saint-Elisabeth Verviers near Liège as the daughter of a Polish working-class family. Her father Bolesław Cieślak (1907–60) was a miner in the coal mine in Liège and conductor of the mining orchestra , her mother Janina Cieślak, nee. Malczyk (1914–85) took care of the household. Villas spent her childhood in Liège and grew up in a conservative family. In Belgium she was baptized Violetta Élisa , but her father registered her in Polish as Czesława Maria .

She had three siblings: her sister Wanda (1931-2006) and her two brothers Jerzy (1933-87) and Ryszard (1940-2010). The Cieślak children could speak French, Italian and German.

In the autumn of 1946 the Cieślak family came to the newly founded People's Republic of Poland and lived in Lewin Kłodzki and Kotlina Kłodzka . Here Violetta Villas learned to play the piano , violin and trombone , discovered her passion for music and took ballet lessons . In 1956 she studied solo singing at the State Middle Music School in Szczecin (today: Zespół Szkół Muzycznych im. Feliksa Nowowiejskiego). She then moved to Wrocław and became a student of Giseli Posch, then to Warsaw , where she studied classical singing with Eugenia Klopek-Falkowska. Her perfect pitch and her coloratura soprano voice with a range of four octaves promised a great career as an opera singer. Villas got offers from show business early on, for which she gave up her training at the conservatory. On the advice of the Jewish pianist Władysław Szpilman , she adopted her stage name after he prophesied a great world career and assured her that Czesława Maria would be too difficult to pronounce outside Poland. The pseudonym Violetta Villas was created by combining the first two letters of her baptismal name Violetta Vi and the Polish word las (the forest), which the artist chose because she lived near the forest at the time (the second l was added artificially).

The first successes (1960-65)

In 1960 Violetta Villas made her debut on Polskie Radio with radio recordings by producers Bogusław Klimczuk and Edward Czerny. From then on she co-designed the Polish radio show Podwieczorek przy mikrofonie (afternoon coffee at the microphone). One of her first chansons, Dla Ciebie, miły , received the Express Wieczorny award as the best Polish hit. He received 67,479 callers (second place went to a song by Rena Rolska with 33,000 callers). During the following years Violetta Villas took part in radio concerts in Germany and Switzerland, gave concerts in Czechoslovakia , Bulgaria , Romania , Spain , Belgium , Israel , Hungary and Moscow and took part in important artistic events in Canada .

Villas secured their success at the International Sopot Festival in 1961 (with the chansons Dla Ciebie, miły and Si senior ) and in 1964 at the II. Krajowy Festival Piosenki Polskiej w Opole (with the chanson Przyjdzie na to czas ). On July 20, 1964, she performed in the Belgian Knokke-Heist together with the Symphony Orchestra of the Belgian Radio at the Noordzeefestival .

In the fall of 1964, Violetta Villas followed a 3-month concert tour through the Soviet Union .

In 1965 she presented her at the III. Krajowy Festiwal Piosenki Polskiej performed the chansons Do ciebie, mamo and Jak nie to nie and performed there one year later for the last time.

She first appeared as an actress in Poland in 1966 when she performed her chanson Chica Helka during a film scene in the second episode of the series Klub profesora Tutki .

She appeared on November 8, 1965 together with Czesław Niemen and Piotr Szczepanik in the Parisian Théâtre Fontaine on the radio show Roue de la chance , which André Chanu organized. Around the turn of the year 1965/66 Violetta gave several solo concerts in Paris, a. a. in Olympia , then also outside of France, u. a. Baden-Baden , Basel and Brussels .

In 1966, at the personal request of Bruno Coquatrix (Director of the Paris Olympics ), Villas was in the company of Polish artists of the Grand Music Hall de Varsovie revue program . The premiere took place on July 26, 1966. Villas sang a. a. Ave Maria no morro and Hiroshima, mon amour . This concert at Olympia is best known for its episode with the crystal chandelier, which - according to several eyewitnesses - vibrated during Villa's performance. Part of the audience reacted nervously and feared that the chandelier could fall from the ceiling with their voices. This fact inspired the popular review that Villas was the voice of the atomic age .

The artist has now received reviews on the quality of her voice and music:

“(...) The voice with a truly unique register - four octaves ! - arouses unusual feelings, especially with the very individual interpretation of the "Ave Maria no morro", which Yma Sumac probably exceeds. "

- Rene Boudier, Les Lettres françaises

"This voice is really amazing, I don't want to believe what strength and scope it is (...)"

- L'Humanité

Reviews in other newspapers sounded similar.

In Paris, Violetta Villas met the French-American manager Frederic Apcar , who was the director and producer of the Revue Theater in the Hotel The Dunes in Las Vegas .

In the USA

Villa's choreographer was Hermes Pan, although Sandro Mandari taught her the scenic movements. She always entered the stage either on a white horse or a Jaguar E-Type . A Christian Dior dress was specially made for the project , which Villas wore to every performance. The artist's jewelry was made by Atelier Marangoni from Milan , the shoes by Quinte , another Italian brand company. In 1968 Violetta Villas played a 20-chanson program for American television and the Capitol Records label . The chanson and the stage made contact with the film easier. In March 1968 she began to take photos for the American film production company Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer on a trial basis , which she then used for supporting roles in films with Lee Marvin , Bob Hope and Glenn Ford .

She was invited to guest appearances at the Sahara Hotel & Casino Las Vegas in 1969 , where she sang duets with Connie Francis and Barbra Streisand . The Casino de Paris came to an arrangement with the Australian JC Williamson Theaters Ltd and let Villas perform with their revue and its 140 actors in Australia for months. During the premiere there, the theater director James Cassius Williamson announced Violetta Villas as a singer from Las Vegas, permanently resident in Paris and born in Poland . Villas protested and corrected that she was born in Belgium and was Polish. Williamson then retaliated by simply turning off Villas' microphone during the next chanson. In addition to their appearances, Villas also supported the local press and local artist associations in Australia. After three months of review, she and her team returned to Las Vegas.

In the Casino de Paris Violetta Villas stepped up in 1971 on a regular basis and then was on May 29, 1971 in Melbourne , a special concert for the Polish Olympic Committee. After the end of this tour, the artist stayed in the USA for another concert cycle in Chicago. Villas returned to Poland in 1989.

In 1992, 1994 and 1996 she gave another concert for the Poles of the Polonia in Chicago and New York.

Return to Poland

After her breakthrough as an international chanson singer, Violetta Villas came back to Poland in December 1968 with her new, unnatural and bombastic-kitschy Las Vegas image and her own revue, the Villas Revue . It was presented several times in the Warsaw Congress Hall. The project - fully funded by Violetta Villas - was directed by actress and cabaret artist Hanka Bielicka . The revue began with the aria Libiamo ne lieti calici from the opera La traviata , accompanied by an orchestra (30 musicians) and six dance couples. Violetta Villas then sang chansons like Love, This Is My Song, Oczy czarne, Strangers In The Night, My Heart Belongs To Daddy and the Habanera from Carmen (opera) against the background of a large ballet (40 people). But then nothing came of it. But the fact that Violetta Villas lived in the village at all helped him and the region to flourish.
