Alt-Moabit is a street in the Mitte district of Berlin . The road, named after the district of Moabit , is around 2.8 kilometers long.
Location and history
The street begins in an approximate east-west orientation at Washingtonplatz as an extension of the Moltkebrücke south of the main station . After about 200 meters it crosses under the Stadtbahn and runs in a relatively straight line with only two slight changes in direction, almost parallel to Turmstrasse a little further to the north, to the intersection with Beusselstrasse , behind which the Kaiserin-Augusta-Allee begins as a direct extension . On the road that follows the course of the former Spandauer Heerweg, which was later renamed Moabiter Chaussee and finally Alt-Moabit on May 14, 1875 , the first buildings were built from 1859 to 1861. In 1860, the entrepreneur Friedrich Adolf Pflug moved into a villa he had built at today's Carl-von-Ossietzky-Park .
Residents
On the street are (from east to west) among other things
- the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) at the east end of the street. Until spring 2015, the BMI was based in the service center Der Spree-Bogen on Alt-Moabit street, which was partly built in the old Bolle dairy ;
- the site of the former Universum State Exhibition Park (old entrance via the still preserved flight of stairs opposite the Paris-Moscow restaurant );
- the police and fire station of the government district . During the Nazi era , the Berlin-Brandenburg regional finance office was located there . Each legally in Berlin and Brandenburg residing Jew was registered here so that after his flight or deportation his possessions could be turned into cash;
- the JVA Moabit as a resident of the criminal and district court ,
- the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Park ,
- the oldest pharmacy in Moabit and
- the Johanniskirche designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel .
- Between Tower Street and Alt-Moabit is the park Kleiner Tiergarten and
- the underground station Turmstraße the U9 .
- The Engelbrot Theater (previously: Hansa Theater , demolished in 2020 ) was almost at the western end of the street .
