geology

The Altbach arises in the transition zone, partly covered by river sand, between the Gipskeuper ( Grabfeld formation ) on the western edge of the Steigerwald and a wide Lettenkeuper area ( Erfurt formation ) west of it in the Steigerwald foreland. Even before Prichsenstadt, the Upper Muschelkalk stands on the valley floor . On its lower course to the northwest, the Altbach follows a double fault running in the same direction.
