The Altbach is a 7 km long brook of the Steigerwald in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen , which flows into the Schwarzach from the left after a northwest run southwest of Stadelschwarzach .

course
The stream rises at the southwestern foot of the 477 meter high Schloßberg and about 1.5 km east of the village of Kirchschönbach at an altitude of 322 m above sea level. NHN .
It then flows in the Steigerwald foreland through Kirchschönbach, a district of Prichsenstadt . The stream, which continues to run west, then passes the Lohmühle on the right bank and the town of Prichsenstadt mainly on the left bank, where it turns to the northwest. In the urban area the Beibach flows on the left side , which is longer than the Altbach-Oberlauf up to the inflow. On the north-western outskirts of the city, it is reinforced on the same side by the Dienstbach .
Immediately afterwards the brook passes the Schnaudersmühle , crosses under the tracks of the Kitzingen – Schweinfurt railway line , then flows past the remains of a settlement from prehistoric times in the Hoflängen corridor , to finally southwest of Stadelschwarzach at an altitude of 220 m above sea level. NHN flows into the Schwarzach from the left .
Its approximately 7.6 km long run ends 102 meters below its source, so it has an average bed gradient of 14 ‰.
Catchment area
The catchment area of the Altbach covers 10.90 km². Its headwaters are in the Steigerwald , the rest of the catchment area in the Steigerwald foreland . It is drained to the North Sea via the Schwarzach, the Main and the Rhine .
It borders
- in the north to that of the Schönbach , which also flows into the Schwarzach;
- in the east to that of the rich Ebrach , which flows into the Regnitz ;
- in the southeast to which the Ebrach in the realms Ebrach opens;
- and in the south to that of the Sambach , which drains over the Castellbach into the Schwarzach.
In the Steigerwald area, the area is mostly forested, the part in the Steigerwald foreland is an open cultural landscape characterized by arable land .

geology
The Altbach arises in the transition zone, partly covered by river sand, between the Gipskeuper ( Grabfeld formation ) on the western edge of the Steigerwald and a wide Lettenkeuper area ( Erfurt formation ) west of it in the Steigerwald foreland. Even before Prichsenstadt, the Upper Muschelkalk stands on the valley floor . On its lower course to the northwest, the Altbach follows a double fault running in the same direction.
