action

The photographer Grace is forced to photograph her guide being shot in Iraq . Back in Belgium she tries to deal with the events. After the photo has already been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize , she withdraws it. Her husband Max is an ophthalmologist and a short time later flies to Peru to work in a small eye clinic in the Andes . Mercury gets into the ground through a nearby mine . This causes a number of diseases in the village of Turubamba. Max and his colleagues decide to get to the bottom of the matter and collect medical data in Turubamba. Meanwhile, Saturnina, a young woman from the village, is waiting for her groom Ignacio to return from the mountains. He dies of mercury poisoning and is carried back to the village when the doctors arrive. Saturnina's mother met the doctors' request to examine the corpse with angry refusal. The villagers now direct their anger against the doctors and stone Max to death. Saturnina then organized a demonstration against the truck drivers at the mine. However, the demonstration will soon be broken up. Saturnina commits suicide by swallowing mercury and filming herself with the camera that Max dropped during the stoning. Grace sets out to visit the location of Max's death. She is warmly received by Saturnina's mother. She sees Saturnina's video. At the end of the film, Grace attends Saturnina's funeral and has overcome the grief over her husband.

production

The film was shot over 43 days between June and October 2008 in Belgium and Peru. Due to the extreme weather conditions at an altitude of 5,000 m in the Andes, a team of doctors for staff and actors was available around the clock.

The film is about a fictional story, but it was inspired by real events that took place in the Peruvian village of Choropampa in 2000 . In addition, some characters, such as Saturnina and Max, are based on reports and anecdotes about local villagers and foreign doctors.
