The Altstädtische Hauptwache , also known as Altstädter Wache , Schinkelwache (after Karl Friedrich Schinkel ) or Neue Hauptwache , is a building in downtown Dresden .

location

The Altstädtische Hauptwache is located in the inner old town of Dresden at an exposed location on Theaterplatz . It stands in the southern corner at the beginning of Sophienstrasse , between the picture gallery and the west wing of the palace . Other buildings in sight are the Semperoper , the Catholic Court Church , the Italian Village and the Taschenbergpalais .

building

The building shows itself in the strictly adhered style of the late Berlin classicism or the Schinkel School and is thus outside the Dresden building tradition. There are no comparable buildings in the city center. The Albrechtsberg Castle and the Lingner Castle a little further away from the city center still correspond most closely to this architectural style. It was the first Dresden building to be built from solid Cotta sandstone , obviously based on the model of an Ionian temple . The Altstädter Wache looks much more delicate than the Neue Wache in Berlin and is much smaller than the buildings surrounding it. In doing so, the builders took into account the Baroque and Renaissance surroundings of the Theaterplatz, into which the building fits in with difficulty, but not without charm.

Flanked by two lower, three-axis side wings, which are covered with flat gable roofs , the central part of the Schinkelwache, designed as an antic temple , achieves a design dimension similar to the ancient Greek temples. The portico on the castle side with its vestibule has six Ionic columns . The triangular gable of this southeast building front is inconspicuously decorated with the Saxonia by Joseph Herrmann , the north-west gable is adorned with Mars by Franz Pettrich . An architrave with a cornice runs all around .

history

“Neue Hauptwache” in the 1830s

The predecessor buildings of the Neue Hauptwache were initially the Alte Hauptwache on Neumarkt , later the gallery guard between the Zwinger and the palace and then a temporary half-timbered building between the Elbe and the Catholic Court Church. They were all used as city police stations. The designs for the Altstädtische Hauptwache on Theaterplatz came from Karl Friedrich Schinkel , which is why it is also called Schinkelwache. It was built from 1830 to 1832 under the direction of Joseph Thürmer . The so-called Sempersche Forum Plan provided for the building to be relocated to the banks of the Elbe as early as 1840, but was not implemented. Since the Palais Serre was destroyed during the air raids on Dresden , it has been the only preserved Schinkel building in the city.

The Old Town Guard was also destroyed on February 13, 1945 and burned down completely. However, the reconstruction took place ten years later and was completed in 1956. The exterior was true to the original, the interior in a modern way. The building was then used for administrative purposes. Since the reopening of the neighboring Semper Opera in 1985, it has housed their advance booking office. Since a renewed restoration between 1993 and 1996, a tourist information office and a café have been housed here in addition to the ticket office and rights office of the Semperoper.
