Altunhisar is a city and capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Central Anatolian province of Niğde . The city is located about 30 kilometers west of the provincial capital Niğde .
The district is located in the west of the province and borders in the east on the central district (Merkez) of the provincial capital, in the north on the district Çiftlik , in the south on the district Bor and in the north-west on the province Aksaray and in the west in a narrow piece of the province Konya
In the north of Altunhisar is the 2963 meter high Melendiz Dağı. The 3,268 meter high Hasan Dağı volcano is located directly across the border to Aksaray Province . To the west runs over the Hamburun Geçidi pass to the E 90 , which leads from Ankara to Tarsus .
On the Keşlik Yayla plateau , about two kilometers north of Altunhisar, the Hittite stele from Keşlik , which shows the weather god , was found in 1962 . It is now in the Niğde Archaeological Museum . In the south of the district lies the settlement hill Kınık Höyük , which was inhabited from the Bronze Age to the Middle Ages and contains the remains of a citadel from the late Hittite period.
In 1990, Law No. 3644 formed the county from the northern part of Bor county. Until then, Altunhisar was a Bucak in this district and at the last census before the change of area (1985) had a population of 22,220 inhabitants (that was 31.2% of the population of the district at that time).
At the end of 2018, the district included the district town (22% of the population) with Karakapı (3,966) and Keçikalesi (3,269 inhabitants) and two other Belediye (communities). In addition, there were six villages ( Köy ) with an average of 804 residents. Yakacık was the largest with 1,575 inhabitants.
