Bor is a city in the Niğde Province in Turkey and the capital of the district of the same name ( İlçe ) in the Central Anatolian Province of Niğde . The city is located on a plateau (1100 m) about 14 km north of the provincial capital Niğde on the D330 highway.

The city is characterized by agriculture: grazing, wool and leather processing. The climate is too dry for grain cultivation; fruit, especially apples and apricots, and wine are cultivated for this. Unemployment is high, the median income is low, and as a result many young people have moved from the provinces to the larger cities of Turkey or Europe in search of jobs.

The district is centrally located in the province and borders in the north on the Altunhisar district , in the northeast on the central district (Merkez) of the provincial capital Niğde , in the east on the Çamardı district and in the south on the Ulukışla district . In the west, the Konya province forms the border, in the south the Adana province .

The plain has been inhabited since the time of the Hittites , the city was founded by the Romans in the first centuries AD. During the Byzantine era, the city was a Christian center of the eastern Mediterranean. During this time it was given the former name Kilisehisar (fortress of churches). The Turks conquered the city in 1071.

In 1990 the district surrendered a quarter of its territory to the newly formed Altunhisar district and at the end of 2018 consisted of the district town (67.1% of the district's population) and three other Belediye (communities): Bahçeli (2,186), Çukurkuyu (2,635) and Kemerhisar (5,264 ). Furthermore, 23 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 424 residents belonged to the district. Obruk (1,225) and Kızılca (1,156 pop .) Were the largest villages.

Attractions

A few kilometers south of the city in Kemerhisar are the ruins of ancient Tyana , including an impressive aqueduct . A relief of the Luwian god Tarhunzas can be seen about 18 kilometers to the southeast in the village of Gökbez .
