Amely Bölte

Amely Bölte , actually Amalie Bölte (born October 6, 1811 in Rehna as Amalie (Charlotte Elise Marianne) Bölte ; † November 15, 1891 in Wiesbaden ) was a German writer .

Life

Amely Bölte was born as one of (at least) six children of the lawyer and Mayor of Rehna Johann Christoph Bölte († 1831) and his wife Amalia Louisa, born in Güstrow . Tarnow (* 1785), born in the north-west Mecklenburg town of Rehna and baptized on October 13, 1811 in the town church there. The later mayor of Hagenow , Ernst Bölte, was her older brother. The writer and translator Fanny Tarnow was her maternal aunt.

From 1822 there were repeated long stays in (Bad) Doberan with Fanny Tarnow, which made a great impression on Bölte. In 1825 she got engaged at the request of her father, who did not want her to be 'educated' like her aunt. But she broke this engagement in 1827, also due to Tarnow's influence.

Amely Bölte first became a teacher so that she could stand on her own two feet. From 1828 she was employed in the household of Chamberlain von Könnemann in Pritzier , where, in addition to teaching, she completed her own education. In the long run, however, she did not fulfill this task. In 1839 she went to England, where she studied English and worked literary for German magazines. In London she frequented the house of the writer Thomas Carlyle . For a living, she first translated novels. But she also began to write herself, initially under a male pseudonym . In 1848 from London in Leipzig she published her first work Tales from the Portfolio of a German in London . This tale made her known. On the mediation of Karl August Varnhagen von Ense she became a correspondent for the Morgenblatt of the Cotta publishing house .

In 1852 she returned to Germany, settled in Dresden and began publishing numerous works. These were primarily biographical novels and historical images of the time, but also contained topics dedicated to the question of women . In 1866 she made trips to Paris and Rome . She then lived temporarily in Karlsruhe and then from 1879 in Wiesbaden , where she died on November 15, 1891.

Works (selection)

In her work, Bölte described the life of higher society in England, and also copied the style of the "governess novel" by Charlotte Brontë . Later she preferred to write biographical and historical novels. She is counted among the socially critical authors who wanted to describe and improve the situation of working women through their work.
