The American School of Paris (ASP) is a private, mixed all-day school in Saint-Cloud , a suburb of Paris , France . It was founded in 1946, shortly after the end of World War II, through the joint efforts of the American Embassy and the American Express Company . It is the oldest American school in Europe. There are more than 60 nations represented in the student body that are taught in English as the primary language.

history

ASP was established as the first international school in Europe and remained the only American school in France.

Founded in 1946 to provide a school for the children of those who came to Paris in the pioneering days after the end of World War II , the ASP has remained true to its founding mission and continues to offer high quality education in English for children to this day from diplomatic and business families. From 1959 to 1967 the ASP was in Louveciennes , a suburb of Paris, between Saint Germain en Laye and Versailles . The primary school was housed in a number of trailer homes west of rue de la Machine, the middle school nearby in a French mansion and the high school in the home of the famous French courtesan and lover of King Louis XV. , Madame Du Barry (1743-1793).

In 1959 the American School of Paris remodeled the house and Nazi remains were found there during the remodeling and cleaning. At the time of the Second World War, the house was used by the Germans, while members of the Resistance from the tunnels were active in the resistance underground. The school was unable to erect new buildings on the site as its stability was jeopardized by the tunnels, the surrounding stone of which was previously used for buildings in Paris. In 1967 the school moved to its current location in Saint-Cloud , a former location of an American armed forces school. Many improvements have been made there since then.

In April 2006, a flash flood devastated a large part of the school grounds in St. Cloud and destroyed several classrooms and facilities. In the wake of the flood, a campaign was launched to renovate and modernize the facility. This led to the reopening of a renovated lower school and a modern performing arts center .
